They have had decades of experience teaching and engaging with the community from their time as an observing assistant at the Stull Observatory in NY, as a researcher at NASA Goddard, and now as a staff member at Bates College. They have always seen a great value in the hands-on learning and application of concepts learned in lecture as being imperative for a well-rounded understanding. As a lab instructor for the introductory sequence of physics and astronomy courses, Cole creates an environment for interactive learning through guided experiments, group discussion, and peer teaching.

As manager of the Stephens Observatory, they offer training sessions to interested students, staff, and faculty who would like to learn how to use the 12-inch diameter telescope on the roof of Carnegie Science Hall. Students who have access to the observatory have gone on to offer observing nights, take data for personal research projects, and create images of the moon, planets, and deep sky objects. If you have an interest in learning how to use a telescope and would like access to the Stephens Observatory, please send Cole an email, and they’ll schedule a training with you.

Community education is a passion project for them. As director of the Ladd Planetarium, Cole writes and presents lectures, activities, and planetarium shows for members of the community. Some of this work is stationed on campus through the planetarium, often partnering with the art museum, to host school groups, senior colleges, and adult education courses. Off-campus activities have included star parties, group observation events, and guest lectureships for private groups and local libraries.

As a budding Astroarcheologist, Cole spends time recreating scientific equipment from antiquity using historical manuscripts and documented artifacts. They have taught others how to recreate and use these artifacts to read the sky – a very important skill that was heavily relied upon for navigation and successful agriculture throughout pre-modern history. Attempting to mimic these techniques at their hobby farm in Maine, Cole processes herbs, spices, and heritage breed livestock into dishes that would have been seen prior to the 16th century. They also study and teach Bolognese fencing, a historical form of sword study which relies heavily on angles, forces, and leverage to defeat your opponent. Physics is everywhere if you take the time to look. Cole hopes that you continue to observe and stay curious.

Cole Hastings Instructional SpecialistLadd Planetarium DirectorManager of the Stephens Observatory AssociationsDepartment of…

["post-2386","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
