About<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I am a Maine native, and grew up on a rural farm in the western mountains. I originally attended culinary arts school and after years of working in the food service industry, I decided to pursue my original interest \u2013 biology. I study how aging changes the brain and how those changes can predispose some people to develop neurological diseases such as Parkinson\u2019s disease or Alzheimer\u2019s disease. I use a wide variety of techniques to explore how some people\u2019s protective genes are turned off during aging and identified a new type of cell in the brain that only shows up in people at risk for neurological diseases. I also study how we (humans) affect the world around us and how some of the smallest organisms like bacteria can change in response to the things we put into our world. I’m especially interested in agriculture and how PFAS contamination in Maine that was hidden in organic fertilizers has changed the biology of the soils and plants that grow in it. I teach laboratory techniques, advanced biological research, and scientific writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
