High Holy Days Schedule 2023

Erev Rosh Hashanah: Friday, September 15

7:00 p.m. – Erev Rosh Hashanah Services, Gomes Chapel

Come join the Jewish Student Union (JSU) and Rabbinic Intern Jules Ilian for the very first service celebrating the Jewish New Year! This service will include many standard evening prayers, special additions for the High Holy Days, and an opportunity to engage in text study with your peers. Services will be conducted in a mix of Hebrew and English, and there are several opportunities for students to help lead the service, especially if they are in touch with the JSU ahead of time to sign up for a reading.

Rosh Hashanah: Saturday, September 16

10:00 a.m. – Rosh Hashanah Service, Gomes Chapel

What better way to kick off the new week and the new year than with a morning service?
Join JSU and Rabbinic Intern Jules Ilian once again for a prayer service that combines familiar Hebrew text and tunes with widely accessible English readings. A highlight of the morning service is the Torah reading and the special blessings and honors that community members receive in the presence of this sacred scroll.

11:30 a.m. (right after services) – Tashlich, Lake Andrews

Erev Yom Kippur: Sunday, September 24

7:00 p.m. – Kol Nidre Service, Gomes Chapel

Kol Nidre is perhaps the most famous and beloved service of the entire Jewish year, serving as an introduction to the sacred day of Yom Kippur. While maintaining the solemn and serious tone of the Yom Kippur holiday, this service will also focus on empowering themes such as hope and personal responsibility. As always, there will be an opportunity for student leadership, especially with English readings, so we would love your attendance and participation!

Yom Kippur: Monday, September 25

10:00 a.m. – Morning Service, Gomes Chapel

Yom Kippur is known as the sabbath of all sabbaths, the ultimate day of holiness, rest, and reflection. Come join the JSU and Rabbinic Intern Jules Ilian to pray together on this contemplative day. Once again, there will be a Torah service with special honors given out to members of the community.

5:30 p.m. – Yizkor Service
Candles burning over the Star of David in memory of the dead.

Yizkor is a memorial service to honor those we have lost in this past year and years that came before. The memories of our loved ones continue to serve as a blessing and a guiding light for us today. Whether you are mourning the loss of a dear one or simply attending to pray and offer support to those who are, you are welcome at this service.

6:30 p.m. – Break-Fast Dinner, Commons 221/222

Following Yizkor, we will hold a break-fast to conclude the Yom Kippur holiday. You do not need to have fasted during the day in order to join, this is simply another opportunity to gather (and eat) as a community.
