{"id":4578,"date":"2020-02-04T08:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T13:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/commencement\/?p=4578"},"modified":"2021-02-19T11:58:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T16:58:18","slug":"voices-of-2020-sam-findlen-golden-and-the-unexpected-joy-of-mathematics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/commencement\/2020\/02\/04\/voices-of-2020-sam-findlen-golden-and-the-unexpected-joy-of-mathematics\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices of 2020: Sam Findlen-Golden and the Unexpected Joy of Mathematics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Sam Findlen-Golden \u201920 of Amherst, Mass., first started at Bates, he wanted to try anything and everything that was available to him. \u201cJust because it\u2019s an option,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, as he&#8217;s learned more about what interests him, he&#8217;s let go of some pursuits while taking a deeper dive into others \u2014 including both mathematics and the performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>A mathematics major and French minor, he&#8217;s a member of the <em>a cappella\u00a0<\/em>group Crosstones and the music director of the Robinson Players, the student theater company.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009779;\"><em>Video by Theophil Syslo.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sam Findlen-Golden | Voices from the Class of 2020\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qmWqX1Xrf78?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For Findlen-Golden, math serves as an organizing principle in his life.\u00a0 &#8220;Math manages to work its way into a lot of places that I didn&#8217;t expect,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It can be math in the perspective of music or through the perspective of history and education, which is a lot of what I&#8217;ve done here outside of academics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"pv-entity__summary-info pv-entity__summary-info--background-section mb2\">\n<p class=\"visually-hidden\">He&#8217;s served as a peer tutor in the Mathematics and Statistics Workshop and, through the Harward Center for Community Partnerships, helped to organize volunteer tutors for high school\u2013aged English language learners at Lewiston Public Library.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As he completes his math major, Findlen-Golden has similarly dived deep into biomathematics, learning how best to model the spread of diseases. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always been a very pure mathematician: I like working with straight numbers,&#8221; he explains. In the past, &#8220;whenever it gets into interpretability, like modeling complex behaviors or patterns in nature, I&#8217;ve always been a little intimidated because as much as I enjoy being creative, I also like things that have objective truth to them. There&#8217;s a bit of a simplicity in that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet once again, math has shown him a path, and he&#8217;s discovering new satisfaction as he&#8217;s explored biomathematics in his senior year, including epidemiology and disease spread.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s shown me that there can be this beautiful blend of interpretability and subjectivity to something that is very objective.
