The apostrophe should look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"44\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/communications-marketing\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-11-at-2.44.39-PM-150x44.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/communications-marketing\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-11-at-2.44.39-PM-150x44.webp 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/communications-marketing\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-11-at-2.44.39-PM-400x118.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/communications-marketing\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen-Shot-2023-05-11-at-2.44.39-PM.webp 526w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Include an alumna&#8217;s college <em>and<\/em> married name in communications to help convey the person&#8217;s identity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Correct: <em>Marie Fairbanks Fernandez \u201962 is coming to Reunion.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorrect: <em>Marie Fairbanks  \u201962 is coming to Reunion<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid confusion between current class years and those of the early 20th century and late 19th century, use this construction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Joseph Smith, Class of 1922, was a chemist.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When referring to spouses who are both alumni, use this format:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Milton L. Lindholm \u201935 and Jane Ault Lindholm &#8217;37 attended Reunion <\/em>(preferred)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Milton L. \u201935 and Jane Ault Lindholm &#8217;37 attended Reunion (OK).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When referring to both spouses and only one is an alumnus or alumna:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jane Smiley Smith \u201965 and Joe Smith enjoyed Reunion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John Jones and Jane Jones \u201965 enjoyed Reunion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John and Jane Emerson Jones \u201965 enjoyed Reunion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2\">Parents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A person\u2019s P designation is included in lists, rosters, invitations, citations, awards, and plaques. A person\u2019s P designation is included in Bates News or <em>Bates Magazine<\/em> stories only when it is relevant to the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parent designations carry the&nbsp;<i>P\u2019XX<\/i> designation (no space between P and class year) or&nbsp;<i>GP\u2019XX<\/i> (grandparent) designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When referring to both spouses who are Bates parents and when the woman has taken the husband&#8217;s name, use this construction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><i>Jane A. and Erik C. Smith P\u201903<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When a parent has more than one Bates child, begin with the oldest child\u2019s class year and add more recent class years, separated by comma and a&nbsp;space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jane S. Smith P\u201900, P\u201902 is loyal to Bates, and is friends with Steve Smith GP\u201901.<i><br><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3\">Alumni Who Are Parents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a person is both an alumnus\/a <em>and<\/em> a Bates parent, include the P designation only when it is important\/relevant to show the person&#8217;s dual commitment\/relationship to the college. (Often is the case with fundraising or volunteer news.) Add the parent designation after alumni class year, separated by a comma and a space, with no comma after the final P designation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chair of the Board of Trustees Mike Bonney \u201980, P&#8217;09, P&#8217;12 announced the multi-donor Catalyst Fund pledge to a crowd in Chase Hall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When both spouses are Bates parents, the man is an alumnus and the woman uses her husband&#8217;s name, use this construction, placing the alumnus first and P designations last:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Robert \u201979 and Molly Curtis P\u201913, P\u201914&nbsp;attended Reunion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When both parents are alumni, use this construction, placing the man first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Victor \u201983 and&nbsp;Liz Smith Ortiz \u201985, P\u201914 attended Reunion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use class years for students, rather than sophomore, junior, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jane Fernandez \u201914 is an All-America selection in field hockey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4\">Honorary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Place a space between the honorary degree abbreviation and the year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Catharine R. Stimpson, LL.D. \u201990<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Honorary goes after undergraduate degree:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Philip M. Isaacson \u201947,&nbsp; L.H.D. \u201997<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Parent status goes after honorary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>E.
