Bates Data Management Tools
Wednesday, Aug. 24: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Ladd Library 148)
Introduction to three Bates-specific research collaboration and data management tools:
Etna Collaborative File Storage – Do you need a simple way to share files with Bates colleagues and students for your research and classes? Learn what more than 50 of your colleagues have already discovered about using the Etna collaborative file share for your scholarship and courses.
Bates Data Papers – Do you struggle with the task of pulling together student research data at the end of each semester? Learn how to have your capstone and research students archive their data with an integrated narrative. Wrangling student data for inclusion in a publication has never been easier.
SCARAB Data Repository – Do you have completed data sets generated from your scholarship or as part of a class that don’t quite fit in a publication or national data repository? Wondering how to make these data available to other scholars? Come and learn how the new SCARAB Data Repository can help.

EndNote – Bibliographic Manager
Thursday, Aug. 25: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (Ladd Library 148)
We will help you install Bates’ licensed bibliographic management software, EndNote, on your own PC or Mac (bring them along), or demonstrate how to install it on your office machine. We’ll also discuss how to use it to automatically import and store bibliographic information and PDFs, and finally how to use the program to insert and format citations in MS Word. If you’ve used other bibliographic tools, we can discuss a possible migration of your data to EndNote.

Create + Share: Media Tools For The Classroom

From capturing class presentations to sharing clips from popular media to documenting field research, video and audio can engage students and colleagues – but where to start? In this session, we’ll review, compare and contrast the basic tools and resources that CRC provides for both creating and sharing media.

Statistical Software
Thursday, Sept. 1: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (Ladd Library 148)
Faculty and their students at Bates have access to several software packages for analyzing data, including Stata, SPSS, and R. Learn about the pros and cons of different packages, resources available for mastering them, and the support we can provide to students using this software for courses or independent research.

The New MLA Handbook
Thursday, Sept. 1: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Ladd Library 148)
Join us for an overview of the new guidelines for citations and works cited in the Modern Language Association Handbook. While the formatting differences may seem small, MLA has altered their philosophy behind how we create citations. We will conduct workshops with students on the new guidelines in the fall, and all library support going forward will be for the new, 8th edition of MLA.
