{"id":4333,"date":"2025-05-13T07:38:36","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T11:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/?page_id=4333"},"modified":"2026-08-13T10:58:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T14:58:28","slug":"ai-tools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/ai-bates\/resources\/ai-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Tools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is an updated list (as of August 2026) of AI tools, resources, and platforms available to campus users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adobe Firefly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firefly.adobe.com\/\">Firefly<\/a> is Adobe\u2019s Gen AI toolkit that enables text-to-image generation, creative image editing, and text effects. Built into Adobe creative apps, it\u2019s available on computers in campus labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apple Intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-intelligence\/\">Apple Intelligence<\/a> is a suite of generative AI tools that Apple added to the Mac operating system as of OS 15.x (Sequoia).  It is available to enable and use on college provided Apple Computers running Sequoia or Tahoe (26.x).  AI features include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Writing tools \u2013 Summarize text, proof your writing, and experiment with tone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Image Playground \u2013 Create custom, AI-generated images.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cleanup in Photos \u2013 Uses AI to cleanup or remove objects from photos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Google Gemini<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google\u2019s multimodal AI model, which can \u201cunderstand and reason across different types of information including text, images, audio, video, and code.\u201d Gemini is available for all Bates users from the Bates Google Workspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Google Classroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/classroom.google.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/classroom.google.com\/\">Learning Management<\/a> is available to Bates users. <a href=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/intl\/ALL_us\/ai-resources-in-education\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/edu.google.com\/intl\/ALL_us\/ai-resources-in-education\/\">Various AI features <\/a>and tools are available for use with Google Classroom. If you&#8217;d like a Google Classroom set up to support your class, please contact ats@groups.bates.edu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mentimeter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bates has a site license for Mentimeter, an interactive presentation tool, which offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/ai-mentimeter\/\">AI-powered features<\/a> intended to save time and provide deeper insights into user responses.\u00a0Faculty, staff, and students can <a href=\"http:\/\/mentimeter.com\/join\/bates\">sign in to the service <\/a>and create Mentis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perusall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perusall<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bates has an institutional license for Perusall, a social annotation platform. Several years before the advent of GenAI, Perusall developed AI-powered automated scoring that focuses on specific engagement metrics: time spent, number of comments, responses, upvotes, and completion.\u00a0\u00a0(Perusall is available through Lyceum).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ollama<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ollama.com\/\">Ollama<\/a> is a freely available, open source application that allows you to run LLM\u2019s locally on your computer for experimentation and testing. (Installed and available for use and testing in Coram: please contact <a href=\"mailto:ats@groups.bates.edu\">ats@groups.bates.edu<\/a> for details on how to access).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OpenWebUI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/openwebui.com\/\">OpenWebUI<\/a> is a feature-rich, self-hosted graphical interface that runs as a web service on your computer.  It mimics the look and feel of a chatbot but allows you interact with local and cloud-based AI models privartely and indepdently on your own hardware.
