Interested users must contact the <a href=\"mailto: vizlab@bates.edu\">VizLab<\/a> and a CRC team member will be in touch.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Projects<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_833\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/files\/2016\/08\/rhinovirus.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-833\" class=\"wp-image-833 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/files\/2016\/08\/rhinovirus-e1475674358636-150x150.png\" alt=\"rhinovirus\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/files\/2016\/08\/rhinovirus-e1475674358636-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/files\/2016\/08\/rhinovirus-e1475674358636-200x200.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">4 in x 4 in Rhinovirus model<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Our 3D printers have been used to support multiple faculty projects, ranging from the creation of custom set pieces for the theater department to printing classroom models for the biology and chemistry departments, such as the Rhinovirus print shown here (created for Bio 314-Virology). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/03\/shields-up-bates-helping-to-ease-ppe-shortage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We also used 3D printing to help with the local PPE shortage in early 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Software<\/h4>\n<p>3D printing generally requires two different kinds of software. The first, CAD\u00a0(computer-aided design) or 3D modeling software, is used to create the computer model that will be sent to the printer. There are many different software packages that can be used for this, but some of the most popular are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/autocad\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AutoCAD<\/a> (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/fusion-360\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fusion360<\/a>&#8211; both of which are free for students and faculty), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhino3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhino<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blender.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blender<\/a> (free &amp; open source). If you are new to 3D modeling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tinkercad<\/a> is a great place to start. There are also many specialized modeling programs available, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgl.ucsf.edu\/chimera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chimera from UCSF<\/a>, which is used to create molecular models.<\/p>\n<p>It is also sometimes possible to 3D scan an object you would like to print, or to simply download a 3D model that has been created for you. There are an increasing number of model repositories online, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/morphosource.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MorphoSource<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pdb101.rcsb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDB-101, the Protein Data Bank<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thingiverse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second type of software is responsible for taking the 3D model and preparing it so that it can be printed. The Vizlab has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplify3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simplify3D<\/a> installed and licensed on a number of machines for this purpose. The very specific settings for each printer are preloaded and modified according to each print&#8217;s varying needs.
