Investment in innovative water and energy conservation programs and equipment helped reduce our carbon footprint, contributing to Bates Colleges ability to achieve carbon neutrality a year ahead of schedule in 2019.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #851326;\">How Is This Achieved?<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>We use vendors who are invested in helping source local products, reduce packaging and track rebates so that we can maximize funds available for the products our customers enjoy.<\/li>\n<li>We spend approximately 28% of our food budget on local Maine products, resulting in shorter shipping distances, lower fuel usage, fresher product and increased support for the local Maine economy<\/li>\n<li>We donate extra food portions to a local homeless shelter and soup kitchen<\/li>\n<li>We collect 80 plus % of all pre- and post-consumer waste for recycling, composting or pick-up by a local pig farmer<\/li>\n<li>We have no garbage disposals in our operation, preferring to us a scrime line which saves both water and electricity<\/li>\n<li>We utilize a menu management system to help forecast food production needs, track actual usage and minimize over-production<\/li>\n<li>We limit disposable service ware in Commons to just napkins and coffee stirrers &#8211; both of which are collected and composted<\/li>\n<li>We use reusable wares at outdoor events when possible<\/li>\n<li>Used fryer oil is converted into biodiesel by Maine Standard Biofuels, some of which is also used to heat college houses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-11278 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"76\" height=\"76\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-200x200.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 76px) 100vw, 76px\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/about-us-2\"><strong>An Award Winning Team<\/strong><\/a><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><strong style=\"font-size: 14.3px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11278 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"74\" height=\"74\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/files\/2021\/02\/check-mark-200x200.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 74px) 100vw, 74px\" \/><\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6><strong>AASHE Recognition <\/strong>&#8211; Bates recently completed its AASHE STARS report, and received its highest score to date, winning a Gold rating!
