HHMI Funding for Course Development
The HHMI grant includes funding to support curricular development in the sciences, aimed at increasing the inclusion of students from diverse backgrounds in STEM. In order to access resources, the chair of the department or program should complete this form , with their plans for their academic unit for both 20-21 and 21-22, to the extent that is possible. The deadline for doing this is Friday, January 17th at noon. The HHMI Steering Committee will then evaluate the proposals as soon as possible, and get back to you with its decisions as soon as possible. A key goal of the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Grant is to remove structural barriers to student success. What evidence suggests the necessity for the redesign of the course, or the development of this new course?
Considering the overall aim of the HHMI grant, (i.e., to increase the inclusion of students from diverse backgrounds in STEM), how will the goals of the redesign/new course support this aim?
What is the role of this course in the curriculum? (number of students served and how does it connect to other courses in the curriculum?)
The grant has funds to support appropriate faculty development associated with curricular work. Have you identified some training module that would help you with the redesign? If not, do you want help identifying appropriate training opportunities?
If so, what is it and what is the estimated cost of attending?
How will the revised/new course incorporate assessments to determine it is meeting the stated goals?
The HHMI grant may be able to provide the department or program with a course replacement, or provide the faculty working on this redesign with a stipend to do the work if it is an overload. What type of compensation is your department or program seeking?
