Charge of the Committee:<\/strong> The Committee on Teaching and Learning (TLC) shall support and promote effective teaching and learning at Bates College. The committee advances pedagogical excellence, inclusive teaching practices, and the recognition of outstanding instruction across the faculty. Committees and units considering teaching and learning issues can consult with TLC.

Responsibilities<\/strong>
The committee pursues its mission through the following responsibilities:

Student Course Feedback and Advising the Faculty Personnel Committee<\/span>
Develop and periodically revise the student course feedback survey instrument.
Recommend procedures and effective practices for the administration and use of student course
feedback in faculty evaluation processes.
Study and recommend methodologies for the comprehensive evaluation of teaching
effectiveness, including but not limited to student feedback, peer observation, teaching
portfolios, and advising assessment.

Teaching Recognition and Awards<\/span>
Recommend and periodically review processes for recognizing and celebrating teaching
excellence among faculty, including teaching awards.

Support for Teaching Excellence<\/span>
Collaborate with the Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL) and other campus
groups to identify faculty needs and priorities related to teaching development and pedagogical
innovation.
Make recommendations to support inclusive teaching practices and faculty capacity to address
diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and advising.
Make recommendations to support curricular assessment.
Make recommendations responding to educational and learning technologies that affect
teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
Advise on institutional priorities and initiatives related to teaching and learning.

Reporting and Review<\/span>
The committee reports to the faculty and makes recommendations to the Faculty Personnel
Committee, the Dean of the Faculty, and other appropriate bodies as needed and\/or requested.
The committee shall conduct periodic reviews of its charge and practices to ensure continued
relevance and effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composition<\/strong>: The dean of the faculty, ex officio, four teaching faculty appointed by the
Committee on Faculty Governance, with one representative from each academic division (Arts
and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary
Programs), and the director of the Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL), ex officio.
The director of CITL shall act as co-chair alongside a faculty committee member. Of the four
teaching faculty, two must be untenured and two must be tenured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
