These may be memorial minutes or more in-depth remembrances of our colleagues. These passages contain respectful recognition of their contributions to knowledge and liberal arts education along with fond acknowledgement of ways they cultivated love of learning and stewardship of their communities beyond Bates. Griffith Professor Emeritus of Environmental Studies<\/strong> (2019)<br><em>\u201cCarl was a pivotal figure in shaping the academic character of the Bates we inhabit today. He was adventurous, interdisciplinary, and, to borrow a phrase he used nearly 55 years ago, a leader with \u2018an audacious spirit of experimentation.\u2019\u201d<\/em>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2019\/11\/22\/carl-benton-straub-dies-at-age-83\/\"><em>Carl Benton Straub, professor and dean with a pivotal effect on Bates . . .<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">2018<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Craig Decker &#8211; Professor of German and European Studies<\/strong> (2018)<br><em>&#8220;Throughout his years at Bates College, Craig remained true to his undergraduate motto.
