Once a student declares a major, a faculty member within that academic unit becomes their academic advisor. The academic advisor helps students explore the curriculum to discover their interests and to fulfill general education requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/student-affairs\/student-support-and-advising\/\"><strong>Your Student Support Advisor<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> The Student Support Advisor program supports student success by ensuring they know whom to go to when they need guidance, assistance, or just someone to talk to. Students are assigned a Student Support Advisor prior to their matriculation and remain with their advisor for the duration of their enrollment at Bates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/general-education\/\"><strong>The General Education Program:<\/strong><\/a> This page provides a helpful summary of the Bates general education requirements, which includes the Major +1, 5 MOIs, and 3 Ws). That deadline may be earlier (early February) if a student is seeking to study abroad or otherwise away from Bates during their third (junior) year. The Center for Global Education provides advising, programming, and resources for international students and for all students seeking to study off-campus. You can find more information on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/global-education\/off-campusstudy\/first\/\" target=\"_blank\">semester\/year off-campus study<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/global-education\/off-campusstudy\/opportunities\/courses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Short Term off-campus study<\/a>&nbsp;on the relevant websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academics\/student-research\/summer\/summer-research-fellowships\/\"><strong>Student Research\/Summer Research Fellowships<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Bates offers a variety of research fellowships to students to conduct independent and faculty-advised research. Students often apply for these fellowships during their sophomore and junior years. They are often a good way to begin to explore questions and topics for the senior thesis and capstone project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purposeful Work \u2013 Industries, Internships, and Interviews:<\/strong> As sophomores continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/proactive-purposeful-work-activities\/\">engage with Purposeful Work activities<\/a>, dive into industry exploration, and expand their professional networks (particularly through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/linkedin-guide\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>), they should take advantage of support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/\">Center for Purposeful Work <\/a>in terms of assessments, industry research, resume and cover letter writing, and interview preparation. Purposeful Work-infused and practitioner-taught courses, along with Purposeful Work summer internships\/funding and mini-grant funding, should also be on the radar of sophomores.
