{"id":14905,"date":"2022-07-07T14:25:15","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T18:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/?page_id=14905"},"modified":"2026-03-13T09:51:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T13:51:33","slug":"chair-responsibilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/chairs\/chair-responsibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Chair Responsibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Major responsibilities of chairs can be classified into six broad areas, and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"c0e8c893-84bb-438a-884a-5f35518bc1fc\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"c0e8c893-84bb-438a-884a-5f35518bc1fc\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Direction of academic program<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"c0e8c893-84bb-438a-884a-5f35518bc1fc\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leads the academic unit in setting both short- and long-term goals, in establishing and executing assessment efforts and in using assessment results to promote continuous program improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helps the academic unit understand and engage with major campus initiatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serves as the public spokesperson for the academic unit and representative of the unit to the dean<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Represents the academic unit at monthly chairs meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submits proposed changes to majors and minors to the AAC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsible for communicating with the succeeding chair about direction of the academic program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"e1e9ce58-5929-4fa7-8e80-bcbd81beceb4\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"e1e9ce58-5929-4fa7-8e80-bcbd81beceb4\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Oversight of teaching and advising<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"e1e9ce58-5929-4fa7-8e80-bcbd81beceb4\">\n<ul id=\"block-83ade680-fef3-459b-90b9-50a780028b37\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submits the academic unit\u2019s Teaching Planning Tool each year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Builds a three-year plan in cooperation with colleagues in the academic unit and with academic units where there is close cooperation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develops and submits the grid each year in a timely fashion, ensuring it meets college criteria&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborates with the dean\u2019s office around curricular pressure points and around under-enrolled courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensures the timely development, approval, offering and review of appropriate courses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In collaboration with their colleagues, assigns major\/minor advisors to students to major, as well as thesis student advising<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifies equitable solutions to reassigning advising in advance of leaves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves transfer-credit requests, as well as other requests that require approval by an academic unit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meets with students declaring a major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meets with majors who are planning on going abroad<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly reviews student evaluations of teaching and when needed meets with faculty around those evaluations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"2c8dcff4-3907-48e1-a26b-2ae9c6ed1da7\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"2c8dcff4-3907-48e1-a26b-2ae9c6ed1da7\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Professional development of faculty and staff (where applicable)<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"2c8dcff4-3907-48e1-a26b-2ae9c6ed1da7\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participates in the mentorship of faculty and staff, which can include sitting in on classes and writing of letters of recommendation&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In academic units that employ staff the chair usually manages these employees. For example, these include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Assistants in instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applied music instructors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applied dance faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-Bacs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technicians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student workers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Language associates in languages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Language teaching assistants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approves timesheets for staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conducts an annual review of academic unit staff&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in the review of Academic Administrative Assistants (AAAs). This typically entails responding to a survey from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"93aa18e4-820b-4ccb-af90-229a26133243\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"93aa18e4-820b-4ccb-af90-229a26133243\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Management of financial resources<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"93aa18e4-820b-4ccb-af90-229a26133243\">\n<ul id=\"block-5bc93c49-cf33-41dd-a952-50ab34915f6f\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manages the annual budget of the academic unit, according to college criteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicates with colleagues around the academic unit\u2019s budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepares budget requests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oversees the use of endowments assigned to the unit, if applicable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsibility for communicating with the succeeding chair around the budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1lz71Sd8BRandqqhceqBufVS-je8jkviUUo8k73mOIfM\/edit?usp=sharing\">Chairs budget guidance<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"b28c6c39-45ef-4a66-abce-93281270107e\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"b28c6c39-45ef-4a66-abce-93281270107e\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Hiring of faculty and staff<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"b28c6c39-45ef-4a66-abce-93281270107e\">\n<ul id=\"block-e51bb5b1-d271-4330-b989-99cea5604585\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Requests resources for contingent and permanent faculty by completing the 3 year plan and participating in the line allocation process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oversees hiring of faculty in line with the college\u2019s guideline, in cooperation with colleagues in the academic unit, and the Dean of the Faculty\u2019s Office<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the academic unit has to replace a staff member, the chair works with the Dean of the Faculty\u2019s Office, Human Resources, and other colleagues to fill the position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"8ca44159-c381-4dde-a0d2-60711b278ca2\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"8ca44159-c381-4dde-a0d2-60711b278ca2\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Facilitation of relationships within the academic unit<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"8ca44159-c381-4dde-a0d2-60711b278ca2\">\n<ul id=\"block-238b19d8-7f68-49bd-91df-24b0eff1fe17\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serves as central figure available to address questions from students, faculty, staff, parents and others.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In responding to parents, please be aware of the limits the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/registrar\/ferpa\/ferpa-overview\/\">FERPA<\/a>) places on faculty in this space.
