The time and effort you take in writing will be an important investment in the College&#8217;s future excellence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please comment on the faculty member as a teacher, formal advisor, or informal advisor. The College&#8217;s criteria for excellent teaching (<em>from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/faculty-handbook\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/faculty-handbook\">Bates Faculty Handbook<\/a> (Article II, Section 2)<\/em>) define teaching as the work of faculty both in the classroom and as advisors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the classroom this means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>encouraging and engaging students as scholars and artists. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>creating an educational environment that permits an open exchange of ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>embraces inclusive pedagogies and evidence-based strategies. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As an advisor, this means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>mentoring and advising of students to help students identify their academic passions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engaging in holistic mentorship tailored to the individual student\u2019s needs during the arc of their Bates education. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>providing accurate information about the curriculum and empowering them to make independent and informed decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your comments are due by May 31, 2026.<\/strong> We rely on you for a thorough and fair evaluation that gives direct student input into the tenure and promotion process. We do not provide these letters to the faculty member being evaluated.
