This is a key part of the science enrichment experience for STEM Scholars who are eager to have a research experience while at Bates.<\/p>\n<p>This and related internal awards provide the faculty member with <strong>a choice of either<\/strong> professional development funds or a personal stipend (funds cannot be split among the two choices) of $1,000 per Bates student up to a maximum of three such awards (i.e. max of $3,000 per faculty member per summer, across all mechanisms of student support). If the faculty member chooses to receive this money as professional development funds, the funds can be used in support of this project or any other appropriate project within three years; restrictions on use are similar to those outlined for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/bates-faculty-development-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dof\/bates-faculty-development-fund\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1706730123699000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0UEb-0zxb80wgG4MgoFNR3\">Bates Faculty Development Fund<\/a>.\u00a0 If the faculty member chooses to receive this money as a personal stipend, note that this is taxable income subject to that individual\u2019s normal tax rates and rules. This applies to faculty who mentor <strong>Bates-only students<\/strong>. If a faculty member is drawing summer salary from an extramural grant, the only option for that faculty is to select the professional development funds.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"50bb3673-a376-40e3-acef-513cd5c8af93\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"50bb3673-a376-40e3-acef-513cd5c8af93\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">The Bates STEM Scholar Program <\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"50bb3673-a376-40e3-acef-513cd5c8af93\">\n<p>The STEM Scholars Program encourages retention and success in STEM fields among students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, including African American, Asian American, Hispanic\/Latino, Native Alaskan, Native American, Native Pacific Islander, and first-generation to college students as well as students from under-resourced high schools in Maine. Students are selected for the program through recruitment and application, and are chosen based on their interest in and aptitude for STEM.&nbsp; The program is directed by April Horton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The STEM Scholars Program takes place during the academic year, and is grounded in a first-year seminar and subsequent half-credit courses in the first and second year that enrich, review, and supplement course work in gateway STEM courses, building STEM identity and a sense of community. The program introduces students to science writing, reading scientific literature, quantitative skill building, and careers in STEM. For more information go to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/stem-scholars\/\">bates.edu\/stem-scholars\/<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Providing Research Opportunities for STEM Scholars<\/strong><br>National research and data from Bates students tells us that providing early-career students from underrepresented groups with a research opportunity in which they work collaboratively with faculty mentors is one of the most powerful tools we have in retaining strong students in STEM fields.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"36dd500e-e16b-4a1a-8a01-fb9ba68339cc\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"36dd500e-e16b-4a1a-8a01-fb9ba68339cc\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Summer Bates STEM Scholars Faculty-Student Grants <\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"36dd500e-e16b-4a1a-8a01-fb9ba68339cc\">\n<p>The STEM Scholars Program has funding for research grants to faculty who bring one or two of the Science Scholars into their research group. The research may be in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, digital and computational studies, earth and climate science, environmental science, mathematics, neuroscience, or physics and astronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant is intended to give STEM Scholars, especially current first-years and sophomores with little or no research experience, a solid introduction to STEM research. Faculty mentors should provide research ethics and lab\/field training, and work one-on-one with the STEM Scholar on research goals, methodologies, and analysis. Upper class students in the lab should be engaged as mentors as well.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"b5e4d956-f0c8-461c-b600-1221772b5e34\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"b5e4d956-f0c8-461c-b600-1221772b5e34\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Application Guidelines and Proposal Review<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"b5e4d956-f0c8-461c-b600-1221772b5e34\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interested faculty members should consult with April Horton about their research program and the STEM Scholar who would be best suited to join the group. Professor Horton consults with program faculty about possible candidates and the PI talks with the identified student(s) to determine their level of interest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty members may submit an&nbsp;application form<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>and proposal by midnight on the date above. The proposal must include an <strong>abstract and a statement describing the research goals and methodologies<\/strong>, the<strong> project timetable with the start\/end dates of the project<\/strong> (these dates will be used as the basis for the payroll contract), a<strong> statement on the specific involvement of the student researcher<\/strong>, and a<strong> budget<\/strong> for student wages, supplies and\/or travel, as applicable. Please indicate the STEM Scholar(s) you have identified. Please write your project description for a general reader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proposals are reviewed with consideration for the degree of faculty commitment to providing students with genuine research opportunities, and the benefit of the research experience to the student\u2019s college career. If a faculty PI is proposing to hire two student researchers, the PI must offer a compelling justification for needing two rather than one student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>STEM Scholars hired as summer researchers must meet with the faculty PI as soon as possible to finalize the project days and organize payroll. Faculty and students should discuss the scope of the project, the schedule and other details of the work before the student agrees to participate. Students are paid hourly (not to exceed 40 hours per week in the summer). Hours are submitted through the Garnet Gateway; the faculty PI approves the student\u2019s hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"579c5fdd-fec5-417d-81d5-7788f8cdd085\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"579c5fdd-fec5-417d-81d5-7788f8cdd085\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Budget Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"579c5fdd-fec5-417d-81d5-7788f8cdd085\">\n<p>Each grant provides funding for STEM Scholars wages (<strong>For SUMMER 2026,<\/strong> please budget at $15.10\/hour) for up to 40 hours per week for up to eight weeks during the summer; students pay for their room and board from these wages. Grants also provide funds for supplies or research travel, up to $2,000 per STEM Scholar.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"bab3ae67-c709-4ee4-8997-db02a44612c5\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"bab3ae67-c709-4ee4-8997-db02a44612c5\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Criteria<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"bab3ae67-c709-4ee4-8997-db02a44612c5\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Students may not work more than 40 hours per week<\/strong> on this project and may not hold a fellowship at the same time as they hold a STEM Scholar summer researcher position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This grant provides STEM Scholars with an opportunity to engage in long-term, intensive research. <strong>Students are expected to work eight weeks full time<\/strong> during the summer (up to 40 hours per week).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because this is a job, <strong>all work must be conducted in Maine due to tax implications.<\/strong> Work can be conducted on the Bates campus or remotely, as long as that remote work is done within the state of Maine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The faculty PI must also submit electronically a one-page written evaluation of the student\u2019s work<\/strong>, and comment on the overall success of the project within two weeks of the completion of the project (see reporting requirements).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each <strong>STEM Scholar<\/strong> <strong>must submit electronically their abstract and report to the PI for approval <\/strong>(see reporting requirements) and to present his\/her project during the Back to Bates Poster Session if on campus in the fall. Students must also complete the online SURE survey, a national annual study that assesses student research.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>All future grants to students are contingent<\/strong> upon receiving their report.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"0bf94a1d-60bf-4881-8179-b45502782195\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"0bf94a1d-60bf-4881-8179-b45502782195\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Reporting Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"0bf94a1d-60bf-4881-8179-b45502782195\">\n<p>Final abstracts and reports by both the faculty member and student researcher are a requirement of these grants.
