First, announcements.<br><br><strong>Kristin Cloutier from the Harward Center wrote with a link to the Harward Center\u2019s recent blog post, featuring a first-hand account of Election Day at Bates from Jenna Dela Cruz Vendil, the Harward Center&#8217;s Associate Director of Democratic Engagement and Student Activism.<\/strong> From sun-up to sun-down, Jenna and her team of students and campus partners brought organization, information, and unflagging energy to the day&#8217;s pursuit of &#8220;informed civic action&#8221; (Bates mission statement).&nbsp; The blog post can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/harward\/2022\/11\/13\/a-day-in-the-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Steve Engel from the Dean of the Faculty\u2019s office wrote to with regard to the Fall 2022 Advising Workshop Series which has concluded<\/strong>. General questions about off-campus short term can be directed to <a href=\"mailto:globaleducation@bates.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">globaleducation@bates.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Megan McHenry from the Registrar\u2019s Office wrote with information on optimization for Winter 2023.<\/strong>&nbsp; Optimation has been run and you can view your class rosters in Garnet Gateway.&nbsp; <strong>Accepted petitions are due to the registrar&#8217;s office by Wednesday, November 30 at 4:00 pm<\/strong> and all accepted students will be registered prior to add\/drop opening on Monday, December 5 at 7:00am.&nbsp; Please remember that only students with an Eligible to Petition status can petition for a course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Couple of notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your course didn&#8217;t oversubscribe, everyone got in.\u00a0 Class mixes don&#8217;t apply to courses that don&#8217;t oversubscribe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you entered a class mix or you&#8217;re teaching a course with a lab or discussion, you may have more open seats than you expected.\u00a0 This is normal, and you can feel free to accept petitions to fill in those open seats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is the first petitioning period since we transitioned to the standard way of crosslisting, so make sure to take your time when reviewing your petitions to be sure you&#8217;ve seen everything that&#8217;s been submitted, that you&#8217;re not accepting more petitions than you mean to, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submitting petitions is a one-shot deal per section, so please be sure that you&#8217;ve selected everyone you want to before submitting.\u00a0 If you accept more petitions than you have open seats, we will assume that you want all of those students to be in your course, so please be mindful of your enrollment limit if you mean to stick to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your course oversubscribed last week and you have a petition list, you have the option to set your course to require instructor permission when add\/drop opens so that you can control access to seats that open up.\u00a0 If you&#8217;d like to do this for your course, please email <a href=\"mailto:registrar@bates.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">registrar@bates.edu<\/a> to that effect by Wednesday, November 30 at 4:00pm. \u00a0 If your course did not oversubscribe and\/or if you end up accommodating everyone on the petition list, this isn&#8217;t an option.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Hanrahan from ILS wrote with information on a series of workshops to showcase the virtual reality and fabrication resources available in the VizLab.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VizLab I: 3D Printers<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tues, Nov 29th, 12:00-12:45 in Coram 103<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This session will demonstrate the VizLab\u2019s 3D printers (including how to locate and send models to print, resources for modeling, and some of the many materials that can be used in 3D fabrication).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VizLab II: Laser Cutter and Cricut<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fri, Dec 2nd, 12:00-12:45&nbsp; in Coram 103<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VizLab recently acquired a<a href=\"https:\/\/glowforge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Glowforge<\/a> Laser Cutter along with a small CNC device called a<a href=\"https:\/\/cricut.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Cricut<\/a>. This session will demonstrate some curricular uses of these cutting tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VizLab III: VR&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tues, Dec 13th, 12:00 &#8211; 1:00 in Coram 102<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this session, we\u2019ll set up several VR headsets in the XR space in the VizLab to enable the experience of VR.&nbsp; We\u2019ll have several headsets available to try, including the Vive Pro, Vive Focus 3, Oculus Rift S, Oculus\/Meta Quest 2, and the latest Meta Quest Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VizLab IV: Generative AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fri, Dec 16th, 12:00 &#8211; 1:00 in Coram 102<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VizLab now has Generative AI resources, including DALLE-2 and Midjourney, which use machine learning algorithms to create images autonomously (see the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/artificial-intelligence-art-wins-colorado-state-fair-180980703\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Colorado State Fair<\/a> for a recent example). Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library relating to the environment and environmental issues. The exhibit currently pulls from four collections, including the vast collection of Edmund S. Muskie.
