He went to Bates for his B.S., then University of New Hampshire for his M.S. and finally Dartmouth College for his Ph.D., all in an effort to stay close to New England’s mountains and coastline. He started teaching at Bates in 1988.

Teaching

Dyk teaches courses in bedrock geology that all have a strong field component of experiential learning. His two favorite courses are the short term EACS s39 “Geology of the Maine Coast by Sea Kayak” and the introductory course EACS 107 “Katahdin to Acadia: Exploring Maine Geology.” At the upper level he teaches courses structural geology, Appalachian geology and GIS. These courses also involve lots of hands-on, outdoor and indoor, experiential learning.

EACS 107 “Katahdin to Acadia: Exploring Maine Geology” every fall; EACS 230 “Earth Structure and Dynamics” every Fall; EACS 391 “Seminar in Appalachian Tectonics, every other winter; ESEA 217 “GIS and Mapping” every other year; s39 “Geology of the Maine Coast by Sea Kayak” every 3rd year.

Every Fall

EACS 107 “Katahdin to Acadia: Exploring Maine Geology”,
EACS 230 “Earth Structure and Dynamics”

Winter

EACS 391 “Seminar in Appalachian Tectonics” (every other winter)
ESEA 217 “GIS and Mapping” every other year

Short Term

s39 “Geology of the Maine Coast by Sea Kayak” every 3rd year

Research

Dyk Eusden’s research is in the bedrock and tectonic history of the Appalachians and New Zealand. He supports these with bedrock mapping, geochronology, and geographic information systems (GIS) methods. He works in the subfields of landscape evolution, plate tectonics, structural geology, and White Mountain (NH) geologic history.

Thesis students advised:

2008: Stephanie.
