About

Todd Carmody received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he won the Diane Hunter Prize for best dissertation in English. Before arriving at Bates, he held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard, UC Berkeley, Rutgers, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, and the Freie Universität Berlin. Most recently, he was a National Endowment for the Humanities Long-Term Fellow at the Newberry Library.

Professor Carmody’s first book, Work Requirements: Race, Disability, and the Print Culture of Social Welfare, is forthcoming from Duke University Press. Other recent publications have appeared in American Literature, American Literary History, and Cultural Critique.
