Initially a novelist, who wrote a total of four novels, the best of which is probably THE VANISHERS, she\u2019s since switched to nonfiction, and has published two memoirs\u2014THE FOLDED CLOCK and DIRECTIONS TO MYSELF\u2014as well as essays in magazines about topics such as avalanches, volcanoes, land art, and small town politics. She\u2019s currently working on a book about a dead French actress\u2019s estate she found on eBay, an art world scam artist, a \u201cnon-natural hill\u201d in Berlin, and end-of-life care. She is the author of <em>Bon Courage: Essays on Inheritance, Citizenship &amp; A Creative Life<\/em> (2023), the short-story collection, <em>Sleeping Alone<\/em> (2022), and the widely translated novels <em>A Disobedient Girl<\/em> (2009) and <em>On Sal Mal Lane<\/em> (2013), a New York Times Editor&#8217;s Choice Book. She is the editor of the anthology, <em>Extraordinary Rendition: American Writers on Palestine <\/em>(2015) and co-editor of <em>Indivisible: Global Leaders on Shared Security<\/em> (2018). She writes for the UK Guardian, the New York Times, and the Boston Globe. She is a winner of the Mariella Gable Award for Fiction, and the JH Kafka Prize for Fiction by an American Woman. His most recent books are\u00a0<em>The Murmuring Grief of the Americas<\/em>\u00a0(2024), and\u00a0<em>Written After a Massacre in the Year <\/em><em>2018\u00a0<\/em>(2021). His 2016 collection,\u00a0<em>The Performance of Becoming Human<\/em>,\u00a0received the National Book Award.\u00a0<em>Lake Michigan<\/em>\u00a0(2018) was a finalist for the Griffin International Poetry Prize.\u00a0His most recent translations are Cecilia Vicu\u00f1a\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Deer Book<\/em>\u00a0(2024);\u00a0and Paula Ilabaca Nu\u00f1ez\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Loose Pearl<\/em> (2022), winner of the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. His translation of Galo Ghigliotto&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Valdivia\u00a0<\/em>received the American Literary Translator\u2019s Association\u2019s 2017 National Translation Award, and he has also translated collections by Ra\u00fal Zurita, and Jaime Luis Huen\u00fan.
