{"id":853,"date":"2016-02-08T14:16:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T19:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/english\/?page_id=853"},"modified":"2024-10-08T10:32:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T14:32:00","slug":"new-scholars-symposium-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/english\/past-events\/new-scholars-symposium-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"New Scholars Symposium 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/early-modern-studies\/\">Early Modern Literature and Culture Symposium<\/a> web site for the latest information on this event.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NEW SCHOLARS SERIES AT BATES COLLEGE \u00a0&#8211; CALL FOR PAPERS<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>NEW APPROACHES TO EARLY MODERN LITERATURE AND CULTURE<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A SYMPOSIUM<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>26 September 2016<\/p>\n<p>The Department of English at Bates College invites papers on any topic related to new approaches to Early Modern Literature and Culture, for a day-long symposium showcasing the work of emerging scholars (recent PhD or ABD) from historically underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will showcase new work by individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, specifically defined as including African Americans, Alaska Natives, Arab Americans, Asian Americans, Latinas\/os, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.<\/p>\n<p>We are particularly interested in questions that contest the boundaries of Early Modern English Literature, including (but not limited to) considerations of ethnography, genre, and geography; that interrogate its received forms, including material cultural and \/ or theoretical perspectives\u2014including philosophies of race, gender, or sexuality\u2014germane to emerging national literatures; and that broach its very definition as a period, arguably from 1500 to 1750, including points of contact with or reference to notions of the medieval and \/ or modern.<\/p>\n<p>Invited speakers will have their travel expenses covered and will be guests of the College from the evening of 9\/25 through breakfast on 9\/27, with all paper presentations to occur on 9\/26. Twenty-minute papers will be grouped into thematic panels, with additional roundtable and Q&amp;A formats running throughout the day. We aim to create an intellectually enriching experience for all interlocutors, including the selected speakers and the faculty and students of Bates College.<\/p>\n<p>What to Submit:<br \/>\n\u2022 A 300-word abstract describing the paper\u2019s argument, critical context, and significance<br \/>\n\u2022 A current cv<br \/>\n\u2022 A 1-page cover letter describing your interest in participating in the symposium<br \/>\nWhere to Submit:<br \/>\nAbstract, cv, and statement should be submitted in PDF format by email to <a href=\"mailto:newscholars2016@bates.edu\">newscholars2016@bates.edu<\/a>\u00a0by 15 May 2016.
