Their spores float continually in the air we breathe. Molds can grow on just about any substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are available. Hazardous levels of mold growth may occur when excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials including carpet, ceiling tile, insulation, paper, wallboard, wood, surfaces behind wallpaper, or in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.<\/p>\n<p>If you observe water damage or mold growth, please submit an online work order request\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/facility\/customer-services\/work-orders\/\">here<\/a> so our Facility Services team can respond and assist you.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Health Effects of Mold Exposure<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>People at the greatest risk of health effects from mold are individuals with allergies, asthma, sinusitis, other lung diseases, and individuals with a weakened immune system.   Health effects from mold exposure include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sneezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Runny nose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye irritation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cough and congestion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aggravation of asthma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dermatitis (skin rash)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Recognizing Mold<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\">\n<p>Conditions for increased risk of mold are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Temperatures above 70<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High humidity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dampness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mold will often start out as small colored spots and left untreated will appear as colored woolly mates.  Mold will often produce a foul, musty, earthy smell.  Efflorescence can often be confused for mold.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efflorescence is moisture that evaporates into salt deposits.  Efflorescence will turn into a powdery substance, while mold will not.
