Bias Incident Report 5-16-12

Dear Members of the Bates Community,

On Friday, May 11, the Department of Campus Safety received the following information through the anonymous reporting system:  At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, two students were walking hand in hand on the footpath behind Frye House. The woman was dressed as a man, giving the couple the appearance of two men holding hands.  Individuals began shouting from a second story bathroom window in Frye House, including shouts of “penis” and “vagina.”  The individuals at the second floor window also threw objects in the direction of the walkers, including a roll of toilet paper, a beer bottle, and an aerosol spray container.

The Bates community prides itself on an ethos of shared concern and mutual respect. We are deeply disturbed to learn that our students might engage in such dangerous and violent behavior, likely motivated by bias. We are investigating the incident. Following protocol the incident has been reported to Lewiston Police Department as a possible hate crime.

If anyone has further information about this incident, please contact the Department of Campus Safety by calling 786-6254, or through their anonymous reporting website at  In addition, anyone may contact any of the Deans of Students or the Special Assistant to the President for Diversity and Inclusion with information.

Please join us in denouncing this incident and all hateful acts.  Supporting all members of our community is a fundamental value we share, and we must all work diligently to foster a climate of respect and dignity for all.

Finally, we remind everyone that if you witness or come upon a possible bias incident, please report it to Security immediately at the telephone number or website provided above.  Security will document the incident, notify the Bates Community Response Team* (including the Special Assistant to the President and the Office of the Dean of Students), and investigate the incident, involving the Lewiston Police department when appropriate.
