{"id":5552,"date":"2024-12-10T09:27:56","date_gmt":"2024-12-10T14:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/equity-inclusion\/?page_id=5552"},"modified":"2025-08-22T14:54:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T18:54:33","slug":"trainings","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/equity-inclusion\/trainings\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><strong>Previous Programming<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Community Dialogue Circles &#8211; Conflict and Peace in Israel and Palestine<\/em><\/strong><br>For students; attendee must commit to attending all sessions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A dialogue is an exchange of information with a specific focus on mutual understanding and learning.&nbsp; The goal of a dialogue is not to convince others that your perspective is correct, but to share and understand the variety of perspectives held by participants.&nbsp; We focus on community rather than consensus. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While there are trained facilitators, there is no authoritative \u201cteacher\u201d in the space. Nobody holds knowledge or experiences that make their perspectives more or less valid. That doesn\u2019t mean that participants can\u2019t critique, question, challenge, or disagree with each other. Using Susie Wise\u2019s book,&nbsp;<em>Design for Belonging<\/em>, as a guide, we will explore how a sense of belonging is nurtured in our workplaces through our physical spaces, rituals and events, communications, and more. We will then introduce Stanford d.school\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/~mshanks\/MichaelShanks\/files\/509554.pdf\">design thinking model<\/a>&nbsp;to apply what we\u2019ve learned to real-life opportunities to actively address issues of belonging that exist in our own workspaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Who is this for?<\/u><\/strong> Are you a Bates staff or faculty member? If so, this opportunity is for YOU! Design thinking is about looking beyond our own perspectives and experiences, so the more diverse our group of thought adventurers, the better. No prior experience with the design thinking process? Perfect! This opportunity is&nbsp;<em>especially<\/em>&nbsp;for you.
