{"id":93,"date":"2010-07-30T15:25:09","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T15:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/campus-improvements\/step-2-evaluation-and-planning-alternatives\/"},"modified":"2018-12-07T13:26:04","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T18:26:04","slug":"step-2-evaluation-and-planning-alternatives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/facility\/campus-improvements\/step-2-evaluation-and-planning-alternatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Step 2 &#8211; Evaluation and Planning Alternatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second part of the Campus Facilities Master Plan (2003-04) was an evaluation of facility needs and priorities.\u00a0 Several alternative plans\u00a0for future campus development were discussed and shared with the community.\u00a0 A final, revised plan was selected.<\/p>\n<p>The inquiries were structured as follows:<\/p>\n<h3>Identify &#8220;highest and best use&#8221; of facilities<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the options for reuse of existing buildings?<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>Can existing buildings be assigned to other functions?<\/li>\n<li>Identify &#8220;sacred spaces&#8221; that should not be changed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Identify buildings to take out of &#8220;inventory&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Are renovations feasible, given cost estimates and code requirements?<\/li>\n<li>Some facilities may be more effectively replaced by new construction.<\/li>\n<li>Identify needs for additional square footage<\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>Replacement needs<\/li>\n<li>Room for future growth or expansion in line with College goals<\/li>\n<li>New or changing programs<\/li>\n<li>Consider appropriate scale for campus culture<\/li>\n<li>Integration and &#8220;fit&#8221; with the campus as a whole<\/li>\n<li>Environmental impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Strategic alternatives<\/h3>\n<p>Explored strategies in order to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Strengthen links between main campus and areas across Campus Avenue<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Strengthen links between main campus and athletic areas across Central Avenue<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Strengthen east-west links through the campus<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Address relative isolation of some residence halls<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Address weak &#8220;wayfinding&#8221; and &#8220;sense of arrival&#8221; issues<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Identified critical facilities needs and outlined steps to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Upgrade residence halls<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Address outdated and overtaxed dining facilities<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Address other long term space needs and improve existing spaces<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Initiate a sequence of new building and renovation projects that can encompass major planning objectives<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Present and select among alternative design concepts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sasaki consultants\u00a0present\u00a03 to 6 alternative design\u00a0concepts<\/li>\n<li>College selects 1 to 3 options for further refinement<\/li>\n<li>Final concept is selected and approved by Trustees<\/li>\n<li>Probable cost analysis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bates College\u00a0special<\/strong><strong>facilities overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>47 academic and administrative support buildings<\/li>\n<li>36 residential buildings<\/li>\n<li>The Edmund S.
