Cassandra Shepard joins Bates College as a Visiting Professor in the Africana Program.

Her research focuses on how disaster impacts people, place, time and space, while paying particular attention to the impact that disaster has on African descended peoples in the U.S. and throughout the diaspora. She is currently preparing her dissertation, “The Colonial Continuum: A Critique of Disaster in Post-Katrina New Orleans,” for publication.

Cassandra holds a B.S. from Xavier University, an M.A. in social sciences from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in African American studies from Northwestern. She has also taught at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
