Wiesinger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>*On sabbatical for 2025-26 academic year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Justine Wiesinger, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Japanese at Bates, and<br \/>\nearned her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and literatures by Yale University<br \/>\nin 2018. She teaches both Japanese language courses and courses on<br \/>\nJapanese culture, including literature, film, and theater.<\/p>\n<p>Wiesinger\u2019s research has been published in the Asian Theatre Journal. Her<br \/>\narticle for that publication, \u201cGlacier or Iceberg? Spatial, Temporal, and<br \/>\nContextual Distance in an International Performance of Time\u2019s Journey<br \/>\nThrough a Room\u201d was awarded the 2021 Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei Prize in<br \/>\nJapanese Theatre Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Wiesinger\u2019s dissertation examines intersections between disaster and<br \/>\nperformance in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 as well as the<br \/>\nearthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident of 2011. Her book<br \/>\nproject,\u00a0Performing Disaster, focuses on the theater and film that emerged<br \/>\nfrom the latter events (known as 3.11 for short), and analyzes the particular<br \/>\ncapabilities of performance to build claims to collective trauma in the<br \/>\naftermath of disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Justine Wiesinger is a Fulbright scholar, having conducted research for her<br \/>\ndissertation in 2015-2016 at Waseda University in Tokyo. She has presented<br \/>\nat major conferences around the world, including the AAS (Association for<br \/>\nAsian Studies) conference, the AJLS (Association for Japanese Literary<br \/>\nStudies) conference, the ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education)<br \/>\nconference, the Tanaka Symposium on 3.11 at Oxford University, and the<br \/>\n\u201cLiterature after 3.11 Today\u201d conference at INALCO in Paris. She has been an<br \/>\ninvited speaker at Yale University, the University of Maryland, the University of<br \/>\nWashington, and Cornell University.<\/p>\n<p>Wiesinger\u2019s areas of expertise include disaster, performance, horror,<br \/>\ncontemporary Japanese theater, and modern Japanese culture. Wiesinger<br \/>\nalso has training in Second Language Acquisition Pedagogy, adopting a task-<br \/>\nbased approach to teaching language that emphasizes authentic materials,<br \/>\ninductive grammatical reasoning, and scaffolded activities that aim to center<br \/>\nstudents and prioritize active student speech and participation. She is<br \/>\nenthusiastic about sharing her passion for Japanese culture and language<br \/>\nwith students and enjoys participating in the close-knit community of<br \/>\nscholarship that makes Bates College so special.<\/p>\n<p>At Bates, Justine Wiesinger typically teaches Intermediate Japanese (JPN<br \/>\n201-202), Advanced Topics in Japanese (JPN 350), Japanese Horror Film<br \/>\n(ASJA 130), Japan on Screen (FYS 501), and Postwar Japanese Culture<br \/>\n(ASJA 215).
