Kuriyama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ph.D., Brandeis University<br \/>\nM.F.A., Brandeis University<br \/>\nM.S.M., University of Notre Dame<br \/>\nM.Mus., Stony Brook University<br \/>\nB.A., University of Hawaii at M\u0101noa<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Zen Kuriyama is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bplrppma5m8&amp;t=3210s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">musicologist<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VkD2vA8u08o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">choral conductor<\/a> who currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VkD2vA8u08o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College Choir<\/a> at Bates College. In addition to his appointment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music<\/a>, Dr. Kuriyama is a program faculty member in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/european-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Studies<\/a>. One of the last prot\u00e9g\u00e9s of conductor and interdisciplinary artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2oAsdne8uH8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carmen-Helena T\u00e9llez<\/a> (1955-2021), Zen&#8217;s cross-disciplinary scholarship engages with musicology, Jewish studies, Christian sacred music, Catholic theology\/spirituality, European studies, and music performance. His scholarship has appeared in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, and his doctoral dissertation on the composer Gerald Finzi and Jewish identity within late-modern Britain won the Brandeis University Provost Dissertation Award. Zen has received numerous research grants, including funding from the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and the Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry. He is currently working on two monograph projects: <em>Musical England and the Jew<\/em>, which explores the complex relationship between English musical culture and Jewry; and\u00a0<em>Endless Light: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson<\/em>, the first book-length biography of the legendary mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (1954-2006).
