These systems include governments, schools, economies, organizations, built infrastructure, the natural world, and more. In this seminar, students will explore Systems Thinking, a critical approach that can help us to understand systems and the vexing challenges they pose. Students will apply concepts like feedback loops, networks, holism, emergence, and the influence of mental models by deconstructing and analyzing historical and contemporary board games. Through play and critical analysis of game systems, students will build a foundation in Systems Thinking approaches, which they will then apply to real-world systems, asking and answering the questions: How do systems arise? Who do they benefit? How do they become entrenched? And how can we fix them?

Explaining Wartime Violence

Fall Semester 2026

      Taught by Jason Scheideman

Genocide, torture, civilian killing, mass rape: Why do people do such terrible things to each other?
