The portal, which is powered by Flywire, enables students and families to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Access monthly statements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See real-time balances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create customized payment plans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up automatic payment from a U.S. checking or savings account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make payments in international currencies in user&#8217;s native language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bates students should use their Bates credentials to log in to the payment portal. Parents who are not currently authorized to view student account information can be granted access to the portal by their student.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"38b06047-6355-4990-827a-b382984794b2\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">How to Access Your Billing Statement<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"38b06047-6355-4990-827a-b382984794b2\">\n<p>Students and individuals authorized by the student are notified by email when electronic billing statements are ready to be viewed through the <a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/payment\"><strong>Bates Payment Portal<\/strong><\/a>. Semester billing notification is sent on or around July 15 for the fall semester and November 15 for the winter semester; notification is also sent on a monthly basis to individuals with unpaid balances. Students are strongly encouraged to make sure their parents or other sponsors have access to the bill by providing access through the <a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/payment\"><strong>Bates Payment Portal<\/strong><\/a>. Checks should include the student&#8217;s name and Bates ID number, be made payable to Bates College and sent to <strong>Student Financial Services, 44 Mountain Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many 529 plans from across the country have partnered with Flywire to provide&nbsp;electronic&nbsp;transfer of funds to schools.&nbsp; For electronic transfer of 529 funds, please verify with your plan provider that this service is available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I make a one-time payment, or set up a monthly payment plan, from my 529 plan through the Bates Payment Portal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most 529 plans do not accept ACH withdrawals from third parties. Before setting up a payment plan or one-time payment, be sure to check with your 529 plan regarding their policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can study abroad costs be paid for with 529 funds?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As most study abroad program costs are billed directly by the abroad program, it is important to check with your 529 plan to determine what costs can be covered by the plan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"9770a995-0ecf-47c5-bda5-839c568b98d8\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Monthly Payment Plan<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"9770a995-0ecf-47c5-bda5-839c568b98d8\">\n<p>Bates offers flexible semester plans to enable students to pay their semester bill in 5, 4, or 3 month installments. The length of the plan is based upon the date when the plan is established. The 5 month plan for fall opens in mid-June each year, prior to the release of fall semester bills. Families choosing this option can set up a plan based on their anticipated cost and are able to adjust the amount of the plan later, as needed. If a plan is not established in June, a 4 month plan is available in July, and a 3 month plan is available in August. Similar payment plan options are offered for the winter semester. There is a $55 nonrefundable fee per semester to enroll in a payment plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monthly payment plans can be established through the <a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/payment\"><strong>Bates Payment Portal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"029e5855-ba35-488f-9d94-656a6563d598\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">GradGuard Tuition Protection Plan<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"029e5855-ba35-488f-9d94-656a6563d598\">\n<p>Students and families may wish to consider enrolling in the GradGuard Tuition Protection Plan, which can help overcome financial losses if a student must withdraw from school for a covered medical event after classes begin. Having this plan expands the scope of Bates\u2019 current refund policy by offering reimbursement for tuition, room and board, and other eligible education-related expenses (up to policy limits).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/gradguard.com\/tuition\/bates\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GradGuard Tuition Protection Plan<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gradguard.com\/insurance-faqs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GradGuard\u2019s Frequently Asked Questions<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"8de2e502-d866-4911-b874-7b4e0cf7c17d\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Payment Policies<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"8de2e502-d866-4911-b874-7b4e0cf7c17d\">\n<p>All student charges must be paid by the published due date each semester, and a late payment fee of 1% of the outstanding balance is assessed each month for accounts with balances greater than $500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial aid that has been awarded and anticipated proceeds from student and parent loans that have been certified by Bates are deducted from the balance due before any late fees are assessed. Students are encouraged to check their financial aid status on the Garnet Gateway to make certain that all financial aid requirements have been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have not submitted required financial aid documentation by applicable deadlines and have therefore not received a financial aid award are not exempt from late fee charges, nor are they permitted to delay payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside scholarships are applied to student accounts when they are received; anticipated payments are not deducted from the balance due before late fees are applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholarship checks from private organizations should be mailed directly to Student Financial Services. Please do not mail scholarship checks with other payments. Scholarships are divided evenly (unless noted otherwise by the donor) between semesters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<p>Loans are funds that you have to pay back, usually after you graduate.&nbsp; Student loan assistance from one or more programs may be included as part of a financial aid award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Federal Direct Student Loans<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are eligible, including those who do not qualify for need-based aid.&nbsp; Students who do not qualify for need-based aid are ineligible for the interest subsidy from the federal government. If a student qualifies for the in-school subsidy, the federal government pays the interest on the loan while the student is enrolled. The interest rate on Direct Unsubsidized Loans is also 6.39%, with the borrower responsible for paying any accrued interest. An origination fee of 1.057% of the principal loan amount is deducted from each disbursement before it is credited to the student account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Direct Student Loan Application Process<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who wish to borrow a Direct Student Loan must follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>File a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\"><strong>FAFSA<\/strong> <\/a>so that eligibility for any subsidized loan amount can be established.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/batescollege.na2.documents.adobe.com\/public\/esignWidget?wid=CBFCIBAA3AAABLblqZhDNWxlyzLIGk7QZvIAD1jWIcVqjkzPqe938_gF_CwcGOb9N_ZcWmg7enouXNPn5MOM*\">Federal Direct Student Loan Authorization Form<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-time borrowers must complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN) at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\">studentaid.gov\/mpn\/<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First-time borrowers must complete loan entrance counseling at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/app\/counselingInstructions.action?counselingType=entrance\"><strong>studentaid.gov\/entrance-counseling\/<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that federal regulations do not permit us to certify loans after the end of the academic year; therefore, all of the requirements listed&nbsp;above&nbsp;must be completed and\/or received in our office prior to<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.bates.edu\/\">the end of the academic year<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Direct Loan Repayment<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Repayment of Direct Loans begins six months after the student graduates or otherwise ceases enrollment. The standard repayment term is 10 years, and alternate terms such as extended repayment, graduated repayment and income-contingent repayment are also available. Information about loan repayment plans (with sample repayment calculators) is available at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/loan-simulator\/\">studentaid.gov\/loan-simulator\/<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n\n<p>The Federal Direct PLUS Loan is a non-need-based loan for parents of all income levels. Parents without an adverse credit history may borrow up to the total cost of education minus financial aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-highlight highlight-box\">\n<p><strong>Key Changes to Federal Student Loans &#8211; effective July 1, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enacted in July 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) made significant changes in federal student loan programs<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Starting July 1, 2026, <strong>new<\/strong> borrowers of the Federal Parent PLUS loans now have loan limits capped at a maximum of $20,000 per year, per child, with a lifetime limit of $65,000 per child.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Existing Parent PLUS borrowers who have borrowed for their students before July 1, 2026, can continue with the current limits for 3 more years or until the student\u2019s program ends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interest Rate\/Loan Fees<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal PLUS Loans disbursed after July 1, 2025 and before July 1, 2026 have a fixed interest rate of 8.94%. An origination fee of 4.228% of the loan principal is deducted at the time of loan disbursement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PLUS Application Process<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The following steps must be followed in order to obtain a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If not completed already, the student must file a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAFSA<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;for the academic year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The parent borrower must complete a Direct PLUS Loan Application at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/plus-app\/\"><strong>studentaid.gov\/plus-app\/<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The parent borrower borrowing on behalf of their Bates student for the first time must complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note (MPN) at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\">studentaid.gov\/mpn\/<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that federal regulations do not permit us to certify loans after the end of the academic year; therefore, all of the requirements listed&nbsp;above&nbsp;must be completed and\/or received in our office prior to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.bates.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end of the academic year<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Disbursement<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Loan proceeds are disbursed in two equal installments, at the beginning of each semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PLUS Loan Repayment<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Repayment of PLUS Loans begins 60 days after the funds are fully disbursed. Parents have the option of deferring payments on the PLUS Loan while the undergraduate student on whose behalf the loan was borrowed is enrolled and during the six-month grace period after the student graduates or ceases to be a student. Interest continues to accrue during this deferment period, however. Alternate repayment terms such as extended repayment, graduated repayment and income-contingent repayment are also available. Extending repayment can make monthly payments more manageable, but may result in more interest paid over time.
