About
Erica Rand is Professor of Art and Visual Culture and of Gender and Sexuality Studies at Bates College, teaching courses on contemporary culture with particular attention to sexuality, race, and gender–and, within these areas, to queer and trans sexualities and genders. Her writings include Barbie’s Queer Accessories, The Ellis Island Snow Globe, and Red Nails Black Skates: Gender, Cash, and Pleasure On and Off the Ice. She serves on the editorial board of the journals Radical Teacher and Salacious. Recent publications include “Court and Sparkle: Kye Allums, Johnny Weir, and Raced Problems in Gender Authenticity” for the Athletic Issue of GLQ, an entry on “Hips” for the keyword issue of TSQ: The Transgender Studies Quarterly, “Five Outings and the Ingredients of My Undoing” in Liminalities (2016), and “The Proverbial Lavender Dildo in the anthology Queer Objects (2019). With Lauren Berlant, Saidiya Hartman, and Kathleen Stewart, she is co-editing the series Writing Matters! for Duke University Press, and The Small Book of Hip Checks: On Queer Gender, Race, and Writing is forthcoming in that series (January 2021).
