Major Requirements<\/h2>\n

The major consists of ten courses in the German program. Required are:\u00a0GER\u00a0233<\/span> Advanced German: Reading, Writing, Analysis<\/span>, at least one 300-level seminar, and a capstone experience. German majors must take a course in German both semesters of their senior year (including\u00a0GER\u00a0457<\/span> Senior Thesis<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0GER\u00a0458<\/span> Senior Thesis<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n

Students starting the major with\u00a0GER\u00a0101<\/span> Introduction to German Language and Culture I<\/span>\u00a0typically take the sequence\u00a0GER\u00a0101<\/span> Introduction to German Language and Culture I<\/span>,\u00a0GER\u00a0102<\/span> Introduction to German Language and Culture II<\/span>,\u00a0GER\u00a0201<\/span> Intermediate German Language and Culture I<\/span>,\u00a0GER\u00a0202<\/span> Intermediate German Language and Culture II<\/span>, and\u00a0GER\u00a0233<\/span> Advanced German: Reading, Writing, Analysis<\/span>, before taking upper-level courses. Students who have started their major with\u00a0GER\u00a0101<\/span> Introduction to German Language and Culture I<\/span>\u00a0and are studying abroad in a German-speaking country during the fall of their junior year may substitute an appropriate course taken abroad for\u00a0GER\u00a0233<\/span> Advanced German: Reading, Writing, Analysis<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

Courses on German and European history and culture taught by the faculty in the German program, as well as courses relevant to German studies offered in other departments or programs may be counted toward the major with the approval of the faculty advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/colgroup>\n\n\n\n

Minor Requirements<\/h2>\n

A minor requires a minimum of seven courses in German studies. At least one of the seven courses must involve the study of literature or culture, taught either in German or English. Only one class in translation may be counted toward the minor.<\/p>
