Thank You!
A Message from the President
2017–18 was a year of continued momentum for the college. Applications for admission increased by 45 percent in one year. We were the number one producer of Fulbright awards among liberal arts colleges, continuing our six-year trend of being in the top 10. We were among a handful of liberal arts colleges to win a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant to transform teaching and curriculum in the sciences and support all students for success in STEM fields. Meanwhile, designs are well underway for a state-of-the-art science facility. We have completed hiring for our Digital and Computational Studies program, and students are already taking courses across the curriculum that encompass these methods. In the arts, our Theater program staged a stunning performance of Angels in America. And our women’s rowing team brought home its third national championship in four years.
These successes and others were made possible by the generosity of over 11,000 alumni, parents, and friends who gave $28 million to Bates and helped us pass the $190 million mark in our $300 million Bates Campaign.
Thank you for making Bates a priority. I am so grateful for your support.
—President Clayton Spencer
