{"id":1732,"date":"2011-06-29T15:59:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T15:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/offcampusstudy\/?page_id=1732"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:11:49","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T18:11:49","slug":"insurance-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/global-education\/facultyresources\/fall-semester-abroad-program\/additional-information-for-faculty\/insurance-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Insurance information"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Insurance coverage for Bates Fall Semester Abroad Programs<\/h3>\n<p>Insurance falls into four broad categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal health<\/li>\n<li>Liability (including automobile accident liability and collision)<\/li>\n<li>Rental vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Emergency assistance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Personal Health Insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The faculty health insurance policies provided by the College through Aetna provide coverage in most circumstances in most countries.\u00a0Faculty should contact Brenda Sawyer or Heather Taylor in Human Resources to determine whether they need a separate \u201cout of area plan\u201d for the location of the unit. Similar to students, the faculty should take the telephone and policy numbers of their health insurance policy and their primary physician with them.\u00a0(Be sure to take the regular long-distance numbers since toll-free numbers do not apply from abroad.)\u00a0Faculty who are insured through other policies should contact these companies to confirm coverage in the countries included in the unit.<\/p>\n<p>All Bates students are required to have comprehensive health insurance coverage, either through Bates or their family. The Bates plan applies to study abroad.\u00a0Claim forms and other information may be obtained from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossagency.com\/bates\">Cross Insurance web pages<\/a>. For advice on the insurance process\u00a0you can call Doris Ducharme, the insurance coordinator in Health Services at 207-786-6199.\u00a0Students with their own insurance must confirm that it applies abroad.\u00a0Students provide the name of their insurance company, policy number, and telephone number on the Student Information and Health Form.\u00a0Companies that provide policies specifically for study abroad are listed on that form.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, it is necessary to pay for medical expenses out of personal or unit funds and then to seek reimbursement through the injured individual\u2019s insurance company.\u00a0The key to successful reimbursement is thorough documentation, with the patient\u2019s name, date, procedure(s), administering physician, clinic or hospital address, payment, and exchange rate on every bill.\u00a0 (Payments by credit card confirm the payment, date, and exchange rate.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Liability insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The college\u2019s General Liability and Foreign Liability Insurance policies cover Bates employees participating on college sponsored activities.\u00a0These policies are also purchased through Cross Insurance. Coverage includes general liability, automobile accident liability, and employment related injuries.\u00a0The automobile coverage requires that the faculty member purchase the \u201cminimum required\u201d liability insurance required in that country.\u00a0This minimum should always be purchased.\u00a0 Conversely, there is no need to purchase the insurance if there is no minimum requirement.\u00a0When in doubt, you should purchase $500,000 of liability coverage.\u00a0Students are covered under the automobile liability provisions of this policy <strong>only<\/strong> if an emergency exists which prevents a college employee from driving.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Rental car insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When renting abroad, you should purchase compulsory local coverage and physical damage insurance.\u00a0To ensure protection under the College\u2019s policy, include the college\u2019s name and address (2 Andrews Road, etc.) on the rental contract, along with your name. The college\u2019s Foreign Liability Policy includes \u201cHired Auto Physical Damage\u201d insurance which covers the first $1,000 of physical damage.\u00a0This policy is intended to cover the deductible not covered by the rental company insurance.\u00a0 You need to confirm that the deductible is no greater than $1,000 and take out extra coverage if it is.\u00a0Students may drive <strong>only<\/strong> if an emergency exists which prevents a college employee from driving. When renting in the United States, you should decline insurance coverage for Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, and Supplemental Liability Protection.<\/p>\n<p>If an accident occurs, the first priority is everyone\u2019s safety.\u00a0As soon as time allows, email <a href=\"mailto:security@bates.edu\">security@bates.edu<\/a> with information about the accident including the nature of any injuries, vehicular damage, the time, date, and location, name of the driver, name and contact information for the rental car company, and the name of the law enforcement agency handling the situation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Emergency assistance<\/h3>\n<p>Students and faculty are covered by an Emergency Assistance policy while studying and conducting Fall Semester Abroad Programs. These Emergency Assistance organizations\u00a0 maintain a world wide network of health professionals, hospital contacts, and rescue teams.\u00a0Emergency Assistance policies provide emergency medical consultation, assistance, and if needed, evacuation to better medical facilities.\u00a0Services include financial guarantees to hospitals for emergency care, identification of physicians and hospitals, emergency consultation and if needed, evacuation for the patient and one family member to a recommended location, and a visit by a friend or family member to an employee who is alone and hospitalized for more than seven days.\u00a0The policy also provides for the repatriation of remains. In addition, the policy provides assistance in locating legal representation abroad and in replacing lost documents.\u00a0Insurance is available only if the faculty member or student is pre-approved by the appropriate provider below.<\/p>\n<p>For faculty, the emergency assistance is provided by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/abacus.bates.edu\/acad\/global-educationstudy\/emergencyassist.html\">Europ Assistance USA<\/a><\/strong> If calling from the United States, the number is 877-238-1234; if abroad, the number is\u00a0202-659-7777 (collect).
