{"id":36,"date":"2015-03-09T13:51:50","date_gmt":"2015-03-09T13:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/isss\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:56:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T17:56:45","slug":"important-information-for-canadian-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/global-education\/incoming-students\/important-information-for-canadian-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Important Information Citizens of Canada and Bermuda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Students who are citizens of Canada and Bermuda <strong>do not need a visa<\/strong> to enter the United States, however <strong>you must be sure to complete your I-94 record<\/strong> with the U.S. immigration official at your point of entry to the United States. <strong>If you enter the U.S. by land<\/strong>, you must request an I-94 record. If you enter by air, your I-94 record will be entered into the online system. You will need to print out your I-94 record upon your return to the U.S. as evidence of your legal status. In both cases, you will be charged a small fee to process the I-94 record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">As U.S. immigration inspectors are accustomed to admitting Canadian citizens as visitors and not full-time students, <strong>it is your responsibility to make sure you are granted the correct immigration status when you are entering the U.S.<\/strong> If you are admitted as a visitor (or tourist) without receiving an I-94 record noting your immigration status (F-1), you may have to return to Canada and re-enter a second time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><strong>Travel Document Check-List for Citizens of Canada and Bermuda:<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Valid Passport<\/strong>: must be valid at least 6 months into the future at the time of admission.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Your Immigration Document:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">an I-20 for F-1 status.<\/span><br \/>\n*F-1 students must print\u00a0 the electronically-sent I-20. At the border, you cannot present your electronic I-20 on your phone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Printed I-901 Fee Receipt\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmjfee.com\/i901fee\/index.html\">SEVIS fee<\/a> receipt), paid <strong>at least 3 days<\/strong> before entering the U.S. The SEVIS fee <strong>cannot<\/strong> be paid at the border.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copy of your admissions letter and proof of funds:\u00a0<\/strong>while you may not be asked for it, it is advisable\u00a0<strong>for new students<\/strong> to carry these documents as well.
