Participation is\u00a0<em><strong>mandatory<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0for all PIs and senior personnel, students, and postdoctoral research associates on projects funded by the National Science Foundation\u00a0and for all personnel supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health awards for which RECR training is required (including training awards and others as specified by the solicitation).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty are responsible for providing documentation of RECR training for each student and others they supervise to ORSP.\u00a0 Please download and complete the Bates RECR Training\u00a0Checklist\u00a0for each trainee, then email the completed and signed checklist to orsp@bates.edu.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Research Security<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"0b26223a-2a52-46d4-b889-fc78d86aa776\">\n<p>In alignment with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (P.L. 117-167) and National Security Presidential Memorandum-33 (NSPM-33) which aim to safeguard US science and engineering research, and to comply with Federal funding requirements, Bates College has implemented several policies focused on ensuring Research Security.&nbsp; These policies and procedures identify requirements for training and disclosures for Bates faculty and staff to remain in compliance with Research Security requirements of federal funding agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research Security compliance at Bates includes the following policies and associated training requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong>Research Security and Disclosure of Other Support<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/policy-on-research-security-and-disclosure-of-other-support\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/policy-on-research-security-and-disclosure-of-other-support\/\"><strong>policy<\/strong><\/a> identifies requirements for training and disclosures by Bates faculty and staff who wish to apply for federal funding so that they and Bates remain in compliance with Research Security and Other Support Disclosure requirements of federal funding agencies<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong>Export Control<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/export-control\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/export-control\/\"><strong>Export Control<\/strong><\/a> refers to a series of laws and regulations enacted by the federal government to control or restrict the access to sensitive technologies by foreign nationals.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travel to some foreign countries may require export control review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ORSP can help determine what, if any, risks or licensing requirements might apply for Export Control.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong>Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment<\/strong><\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/policy-on-malign-foreign-talent-recruitment-programs\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/policy-on-malign-foreign-talent-recruitment-programs\/\">Policy<\/a> <\/strong>on Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pursuant to Section 10632 (42 U.S.C. \u00a7 19232), each individual identified as senior\/key person on an NSF grant must certify prior to proposal submission and annually thereafter for the duration of the award that they are not a party to a malign foreign talent recruitment Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Program<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"7a197cea-6975-42f4-a396-8eff6a7c127a\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"7a197cea-6975-42f4-a396-8eff6a7c127a\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Data Management and Sharing Plan<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"2b15d8c4-518a-4d39-abb0-bca0ace6d1e7\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates Research Data Management <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/policies\/access-use\/research-data-management-policy-2\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/policies\/access-use\/research-data-management-policy-2\/\">Policy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data Management and Sharing<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/data-management-and-sharing-plan-resources\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/grants\/data-management-and-sharing-plan-resources\/\">Resources<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bates DMSP <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/research-resources\/bates-dmp-worksheet-form\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/research-resources\/bates-dmp-worksheet-form\">Worksheet<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Good research data management practices allow Bates College and its researchers to meet funder, ethical, legal, and other obligations. A data management and sharing plan (DMSP) is a concise cradle-to-grave<strong>&nbsp;\u201clife cycle\u201d narrative for the products of your scholarship&nbsp;<\/strong>that describe how the research data will be collected, stored, analyzed, preserved, and shared. Bates&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/policies\/access-use\/research-data-management-policy-2\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/policies\/access-use\/research-data-management-policy-2\/\">Research Data Management Policy<\/a> describes the shared responsibilities and expectations for the retention, disposal, and access of research data generated at Bates College regardless of funding or external collaboration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, many funding agencies require a DMSP for projects involving data collection as part of a grant proposal, and most funders (even those that don\u2019t require a DMSP at the time of submission) have record retention policies that extend years beyond submission of the final grant reports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ORSP partners with Information and Library Services and Pete Schlax, the Science and Data Librarian, to assist faculty with preparation of their DMSPs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"a9de078c-844e-4c6f-9f1b-00d9edfed076\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"a9de078c-844e-4c6f-9f1b-00d9edfed076\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) &#8211; Animal Research<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"a9de078c-844e-4c6f-9f1b-00d9edfed076\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates IACUC <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/biology\/student-resources\/iacuc-forms\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/biology\/student-resources\/iacuc-forms\/\">website<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-66b5b61a-b020-4fa5-b9ec-0c351aa43d08\">The IACUC reviews and oversees research and educational activities involving vertebrate animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-5d47f384-aa3f-447a-b48b-f4394e771881\">Proposed research involving vertebrate animals <strong>must<\/strong> be approved by the IACUC before the work begins.&nbsp; Often, external funders require proof of IACUC approval before they will release funds to Bates College.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"615c1e55-7f6e-4e87-a70a-562ac3f78ad8\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"615c1e55-7f6e-4e87-a70a-562ac3f78ad8\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"615c1e55-7f6e-4e87-a70a-562ac3f78ad8\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates IBC <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/biosafety\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/biosafety\/\">website<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6245f872-6dc8-4011-99bc-3b809060ab58\">Biosafety level 2 organisms or cells or tissues, (including most human, non-human primate, or other mammalian cells) at Bates College requires approval of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Work with Biosafety Level 3 or 4 organisms is not permitted on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6fe414d2-1e6f-4667-8dfa-c1dfed376d24\">Work with recombinant DNA also requires approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee. <strong>rDNA work that is expected to be exempt from IBC approval should still submit a proposal to obtain an official \u201cExempt\u201d letter.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap\" id=\"d3ee1211-0549-44fe-a40e-f0409ea62593\"><div class=\"btn-action\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"d3ee1211-0549-44fe-a40e-f0409ea62593\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Institutional Review Board (IRB) &#8211; Human Subjects Research<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"d3ee1211-0549-44fe-a40e-f0409ea62593\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bates IRB <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/institutional-review-board\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/bates.edu\/institutional-review-board\">website<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Research <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: var(--fontSansSerif);\">that involves the gathering of data from living human beings or from biological specimens collected from living human beings is defined as \u201chuman subjects research.\u201d&nbsp; The Bates College Institutional Review Board (IRB) approves research projects involving the use of human participants (or source-identifiable biospecimens from human participants).&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRB approval <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: var(--fontSansSerif);\">is <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: var(--fontSansSerif);\">required<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;
