Certificate Authentication Error Message (Mac)

If you are receiving an Authenticate to Network "Bates Secure" error message when connecting your Mac to Bates WiFi, you may need to delete an expired security certificate from your Mac Keychain.

Accessing the Keychain Utility –

  • From the Finder menu, click on the Go menu
  • Click on Utilities from the drop-down menu
  • Double-click on KeyChain Access

Deleting an Expired Certificate –

  • In the left margin, under the Keychains section, click on login
  • In the left margin, under the Category section, click on Certificates
  • Browse through your certificates and look for one named clearpass.bates.edu with an expiration date of April 14, 2018.
  • Click on the certificate to select it
  • Click on Edit from the Keychain Access menu and click on Delete
    • If a window pops up asking Are you sure you want to delete "clearpass.bates.edu" from the login keychain? click on the Delete button

  • You will be prompted for your Username and Password
    • The Username may already be prefilled for you with your full name or your Bates Username. Either of these will work
    • Enter your Bates Password in the Password field and click on the Update Settings button, and the certificate will be deleted

  • Click on the Keychain Access menu, and from the drop-down menu, click on Quit Keychain Access

Accepting a New Certificate –
If you do not have a certificate named clearpass.bates.edu with an expiration date of May 13, 2020, you may need to accept a new certificate when connecting to Bates WiFi

  • Connect to Bates WiFi – "Bates Secure"
  • You will receive an Authenticate to Network "Bates Secure" pop-up window
  • Click on the Continue button
  • You will be prompted for a Username and Password
    • The Username may already be prefilled for you with your full name or your Bates Username. Either of these will work
    • Enter your Bates Password in the Password field and click on the Update Settings button
