New Scholars Symposium 2018

NEW SCHOLARS SERIES AT BATES COLLEGE

NEW APPROACHES TO GENDER AND MIGRATION IN THE US SINCE 1900, A GRADUATE SYMPOSIUM, May 11, 2018

The Department of History at Bates College invites papers on the topic of gender and migration to and/or  within the United States since 1900. Presentations will be part of a day-long graduate symposium showcasing the work of emerging scholars (recent PhD or ABD) from historically underrepresented groups. (Individuals from underrepresented groups include such US citizens as African Americans, Alaska Natives, Arab Americans, Asian Americans, Latinx, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.)

Of special interest is work that considers gender and sexuality intersectionally with other markers of social difference; or that employs a transnational or translocal framework; or that raises the historic visibility of women migrants.

Invited speakers will receive a small stipend, and will have their travel expenses covered. They will be guests of the College from the evening of Thursday May 10, 2018 through breakfast on Saturday, May 12, with all presentations to occur on Friday, May 11. Participants will present twenty-minute papers to faculty and students and engage in roundtable discussions and Q &A sessions.

What to Submit:

  • A 300-word abstract describing the paper’s argument, critical context, and significance.
  • A current CV.
  • A 1-sentence statement confirming self-identification as a member of a historically underrepresented group.

Where and When to Submit:

Abstract, cv, and statement should be submitted in PDF format by email to History2018@bates.edu by January 20, 2018. Participants will be notified of acceptance by February 10.
