March Room Selection Process

Each year during Winter Semester, the Office of Residence Life and Health Education administers a variety of processes through which current students may select housing for the following year. This includes options such as:

  • Off-Campus Housing
  • Theme Houses
  • On-Campus Suites

In addition to these specialized housing options there is the general housing lottery for the majority of students.

Short Term Housing

Based on the variety of academic and enriching opportunities available during Short Term, there are several reasons that students may stay on campus. Students should read about the requirements, deadlines, and application steps on the Short Term page.

Summer Housing

Every summer, while most of the campus is used for conferences, camps, and events, one of residence halls remains available to current Bates students to pursue paid and funded academic and career opportunities.

On-campus housing is limited to current Bates students employed during the summer in the
following capacities:

  • Conducting research supervised by a Bates faculty member
  • Working for an administrative office of the College
  •  Participating in a Bates funded Purposeful Work internship
  •  Participating in community work funded by the Harward Center

Summer Placement

If you were unable to choose a room in the housing selection process, you will need to apply for Summer Placement. This could include if you missed the general housing selection, were unable to select your first choice of room type (single/double), did not selection a space in the Remaining Room Process or you applied after the general housing deadline.  This application will open a few weeks after the general housing selection.

Winter Placement

Students who are not on campus for the fall and will require on-campus housing for the winter semester must enter the Winter Placement Process to receive a room assignment. We will begin accepting housing applications in late October each year with assignments being released in mid-December.
