While the majority of the college is on limited service or fully closed for the break, there are some categories of students that are allowed to continue to have access on campus and remain in campus housing, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/housing\/winter-break-housing-overview\/#Staying-Over-Break\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/housing\/winter-break-housing-overview\/#Staying-Over-Break\">Staying Over Break<\/a> section for more information on that. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading Departure Instructions\" id=\"Departure-Instructions\">Departure Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"1e3da402-511b-4079-a44f-6a47b8b1ca6d\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"on-campus-students-before-you-depart-campus\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"1e3da402-511b-4079-a44f-6a47b8b1ca6d\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">On-Campus Students: Before You Depart Campus<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"1e3da402-511b-4079-a44f-6a47b8b1ca6d\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">All students should complete the following tasks before they leave campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Take out the trash and recycling<br><\/strong>Take your trash and unusable items to the trash area. Anything in a trash bag or in the hallway is considered trash and will be disposed of. If you have large broken items please throw them out to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/facility\/year-end-information\/\">avoid charges<\/a>. If you don\u2019t know if something can be recycled, check the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/material-flows\/\">Bates Sustainability<\/a>&nbsp;page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Close your windows<br><\/strong>Make sure your windows are closed and latched and shades pulled down. Leaving a window even slightly cracked can lead to a pipe bursting in your room damaging all of your and your neighbors\u2019 belongings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Leave nothing in the hallways or common rooms<br><\/strong>Store your items in your room or in the designated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/facility\/on-campus-storage-areas-block-editor\/\">on-campus storage areas<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Lock your room<br><\/strong>Easily prevent theft of your belongings by locking your door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Bring all the items you will need for the break<\/strong><br>Your access will not be turned on again until Sunday, January 11th, 2025. Many campus buildings will have the heat turned down and will be inaccessible to students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"df0dc9dd-d67b-4acf-b713-e503f8411ace\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"students-not-returning-for-winter-semester\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"df0dc9dd-d67b-4acf-b713-e503f8411ace\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Students Not Returning For Winter Semester<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"df0dc9dd-d67b-4acf-b713-e503f8411ace\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">Students that are not returning for the winter semester should complete the following additional tasks before they leave campus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Clean<br><\/strong>Ask your custodian for trash bags, brooms, or vacuums to make sure your room has been left in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/facility\/year-end-information\/\">\u201cbroom clean condition\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\">free of all debris<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\">free of personal effects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\">swept clean after their belongings have been removed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Return your key<br><\/strong>You should return your key to Campus Security before you leave to avoid late or rekeying fees. You should not leave your key in your room or give it to a friend to return. Check the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/access\/\">Access Control<\/a>&nbsp;website for information on the fees associated with not returning your key on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Return your library items<br><\/strong>Make sure you return your library books and media to stay free of fees. You can see the Fines &amp; Replacement costs on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/about\/fines\/\">Library website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Remove all items from on-campus storage<br><\/strong>If you are not returning for the winter semester, you should remove any items from on-campus storage spaces. In May, any student belongings that are left in storage areas shall be removed and donated to the clean sweep charitable sale.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"de835cfc-d243-4a09-8db1-1f9095ba4c0a\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"off-campus-students\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"de835cfc-d243-4a09-8db1-1f9095ba4c0a\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Off-Campus Students<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"de835cfc-d243-4a09-8db1-1f9095ba4c0a\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">Before you head home for the break, Campus Safety would like to offer the following tips in securing your off-campus house:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Lock up or take your valuables<\/strong><br>Try to take your valuables with you when you leave for break.&nbsp; If you can\u2019t take them with you, try to secure them in a space that you can secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Consider Telling your Neighbors<\/strong><br>Giving your neighbors the heads up that you are off on vacation is a useful way of making sure that someone is keeping an eye on your home for you, even if they are doing it subconsciously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">If they know you are away and see something or someone unusual, it will trigger them to be a little more watchful as they know that you are not there. You should also leave a contact number with them if they do not have one already so that they can be in touch if they have any suspicions or concerns that you should be aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Consider Your Curtains<\/strong><br>Strange as this may sound, your curtains, blinds, and shutters tell a story of their own to anyone who is watching your home with a view to gaining entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"js-ignore-toc\">If you usually leave your shutters half-open, or blinds rolled up, suddenly shutting them all with giving your house a locked-down look, which will scream \u201cvacant\u201d to anyone who is interested. As much as possible, keep your curtains, blinds, and shutters in a similar position to how they usually would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Don\u2019t Stash Your Key<\/strong><br>It can be tempting to leave a key hidden outside your property just in case someone needs to pop in for you.&nbsp; Don\u2019t do this \u2013 especially don\u2019t do this when you are going away for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Turn Off Electrical Appliances<\/strong><br>To help reduce the risk of electrical fires while your home is vacant, switch off and unplug any unnecessary electrical items, including TVs, radios, coffee makers, fans, and lamps. You should also close internal doors where possible to help slow the spread of smoke and fire should the worst happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Check doors and Windows<\/strong><br>It might seem obvious, but make sure the last person to leave the house has checked all the windows and exterior doors to see that they have been locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Keep Lights On<\/strong><br>If it is possible, purchase a timer that can be attached to the interior and exterior lights so they can be turned off and on during different times.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Staying-Over-Break\">Staying Over Break<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdfevFnm-5zX9FncAxc9TfMqTsPfFqaoNeVULMb7QZtnIXdqw\/viewform?usp=publish-editor\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdfevFnm-5zX9FncAxc9TfMqTsPfFqaoNeVULMb7QZtnIXdqw\/viewform?usp=publish-editor\">The 25-26 Winter Break Housing application is now open<\/a>. Please email housing@bates.edu if you need assistance.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">Certain groups of students may request to reside on campus during this break.&nbsp;Because of the logistics related to housing availability and dining options, the reasons for which students may be approved to remain on campus are limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">In conjunction with the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Services, <strong>some campus houses and halls close for break while others remain open. <\/strong>For students remaining on campus during this break whose building is closed, we will work with you to coordinate a space within an open building.&nbsp;More information will be sent to student applicants early on during the week of December 8-12, 2025 about this including information about what buildings will remain open or closed for the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"807a6c7b-f639-478b-9932-036492d92b6b\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"eligibility-and-application\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"807a6c7b-f639-478b-9932-036492d92b6b\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Eligibility and Application<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"807a6c7b-f639-478b-9932-036492d92b6b\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Eligibility<br><\/strong>Only students in the following categories are eligible to remain on campus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">Senior students completing a year-long thesis&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">International students<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">Varsity winter athletes, required to be on campus by their coaches<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"js-ignore-toc\" class=\"js-ignore-toc\"><span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">Students with significant extenuating personal or family circumstances<\/span>*<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">The application for Winter Break 25-26 will be available from November 13, 2025 through December 4th, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">*For students with unique situations looking to request winter break housing, please fill out our application and include as much info as you are comfortable. Our office will follow-up with students for more information as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Varsity Athletes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">Varsity athletes will have their access dates determined by Athletics, as such <strong>they do NOT need to fill out this form<\/strong>. Residence Life will not coordinate access on days other than those permitted by Athletics, unless the student falls into a different category above. If individual athletes have questions, they should contact their coach.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"b365bde6-fe75-46d8-bbaf-e3388a198abf\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"residences-and-access\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"b365bde6-fe75-46d8-bbaf-e3388a198abf\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Residences and Access<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"b365bde6-fe75-46d8-bbaf-e3388a198abf\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Reducing our Carbon Footprint<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In coordination with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/\">Bates Sustainability<\/a>, we will continue to decrease the number of residences fully open for Winter Break. During break there will be a few buildings open at full temperature, some at low temperature (~61F\/16C), and some will be fully closed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><em>Building Temperature Status<\/em><br>We will make determinations on which buildings will remain open for break based on the forms we receive (and athletic rosters). We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through the arrangements for the break and seek to close as many under-occupied buildings as possible. If your regular residence is closed, our office will work with you to have a different assignment over break.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><em>What we gain<\/em><br>By setting back the building temperatures in low occupancy spaces we save the following during the winter break:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">&#8211;<span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">5,300&nbsp; gallons of&nbsp; Oi<\/span>l<br>&#8211;<span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">10,000&nbsp; ccf of Natural Ga<\/span>s<br>&#8211;<span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">10,000 gallons of Renewable Fuel Oi<\/span>l<br>&#8211;<span style=\"font-size: revert;background-color: var(--backgroundcolor);color: initial;font-family: var(--fontSansSerif)\">100,000 kWh of electricity<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\">This has a direct result of us not emitting 238 tonnes of greenhouse gases, and is the equivalent of keeping 60 cars off the road annually. It is a large portion of our carbon footprint &#8211; roughly 17% this year, meaning, we would be 17% higher if we had no ability to cool the buildings during breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Residence Access<\/strong><br>Students will have access to their break residence (regular semester room or temporary space) 24\/7. Students do not generally have open access to other residences during the break as they do during the semester. If the building they are residing in over break does not have a kitchen, students will be given access to a building that does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Cost<\/strong><br>Students that are approved to be on campus have no &#8220;rent&#8221; charge. See below for meal information.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"870ff189-d38c-46a8-9151-df70508082fb\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"meals\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"870ff189-d38c-46a8-9151-df70508082fb\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Meals<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"870ff189-d38c-46a8-9151-df70508082fb\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Commons<\/strong><br>The board meal plan ends with dinner on Monday, December 15, 2025 and begins again for Winter 2026 with dinner on Tuesday, January 13th, 2025. Students choosing to eat in Commons over this period will be charged per meal when open. Commons will be closed completely Wednesday, December 18, 2024 \u2013 Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Please check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/dining\/hours-of-operation2\/#winter-break-hours\">Dining Services<\/a> website for specifics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Academic Break Meal Plan<\/strong><br>Students who receive financial aid and have calculated family contributions of $15,000 or less are eligible for the Academic Break Meal Plan, which extends the student meal plan to include meals during academic breaks. Please check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/financial-services\/academic-break-meal-plan\/\">Academic Break Meal Plan<\/a> website for specifics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Cooking Meals<br><\/strong>Students are able to cook their own meals in certain buildings over the break. If the building they are residing in over break does not have a kitchen, students will be given access to a building that does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bates-shortcodes-btn btn-wrap  js-ignore-toc\" id=\"1f566614-862b-4879-b5b9-e1563a649671\"><div class=\"btn-action\" id=\"programs-and-services\" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"1f566614-862b-4879-b5b9-e1563a649671\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\"><h3 class=\"btn-title\">Programs and Services<\/h3><div class=\"btn-arrow\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"btn-content\" id=\"1f566614-862b-4879-b5b9-e1563a649671\">\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">We support students throughout the academic year, including on breaks! A variety of offices and individual students collaborate each break period to provide events and programming for students who are staying on campus during break to get out of their rooms, engage with friends and meet new people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Breaks at Bates<\/strong><br>Breaks at Bates funding is available to students wishing to host an event or program open to all Bates students during official college breaks. Please review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/campus\/events\/breaks-at-bates\/\">Breaks at Bates<\/a> website or connect to Campus Life with questions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\"><strong>Bates Health Center<\/strong><br>The partnership between CMMC and BHS is an essential connection to high-quality medical care. Staff in these areas will be relied upon to support the medical needs of our campus community during school breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">Health Services is closed during school breaks, such as the Thanksgiving Recess, Winter Recess between Fall and Winter semesters, the February Recess,  and the Summer Recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"js-ignore-toc\" id=\"js-ignore-toc\">To access medical care during breaks, students will be referred to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmhc.org\/location\/central-maine-family-medicine-residency\/\">Central Maine Family Medical Residency<\/a>&nbsp;at 76 High Street. Appointments can be made by calling <strong>207-795-2800<\/strong>.&nbsp;Dr. Picard is listed as the Primary Care Provider for many Bates students.&nbsp;Many of the physicians at BHS, Jess Segar (RN), Kelly Ducas (MA), Allison Ceprano (PSR), and Bisharo Ali (PSR) will be at the Residency Clinic for continuity of care.
