{"id":7001,"date":"2013-11-04T09:28:53","date_gmt":"2013-11-04T14:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/?page_id=7001"},"modified":"2023-11-06T12:36:57","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T17:36:57","slug":"mobile-data-security","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/ils\/mobile-data-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile Data Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Data Encryption at Bates College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your computer\u2019s hard drive and data have been encrypted and are now being protected with Sophos Safeguard (Windows) or Mac File Vault (Mac) to keep your information safe and secure.<\/p>\n<p>Disk encryption is a technology used to protect your data by converting it into unreadable code that cannot be deciphered easily by unauthorized individuals. Disk encryption utilizes special software to encrypt all the data on your computer\u2019s hard drive. Disk encryption prevents unauthorized access to data stored on your computer in the event of a loss or theft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to the software that is being utilized to keep your data secure, it is also important for individuals to practice good data security and computing safety practices to keep the college\u2019s data safe and secure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A list of safe computing tips follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going Mobile \u2013 Tips for Traveling with your Bates Computer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To protect yourself and the college\u2019s data, first and most importantly, <strong>turn off your laptop computer when it is not in use<\/strong>. The following are some additional recommendations when traveling with your Bates computer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">If your Bates computer isn\u2019t necessary in your travels, don\u2019t bring it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Carry your computer as inconspicuously as possible; keeping it out of sight from others when possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Keep your computer in a secure place when it is not in use. Lock it up when ever possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Watch out for shoulder surfers. These are individuals who who might sit unnecessarily close to you in the hopes of spying on your personal information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Always be aware of your surroundings and consistently reevaluate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Backup your data before traveling or utilize your \u201cBates Work\u201d folder for saving files.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Use your Bates computer whenever possible instead of a hotel or kiosk computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Do not use file and print sharing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Disable your wireless Internet connection when not in use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Don\u2019t check email or other web sites that require a username and password on a public computer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When Something Goes Wrong<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the event of a computer loss or theft, contact the local authorities and contact Bates College Campus Safety at <strong>(207) 786-6254<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a data security breach or compromise, contact the IT Service Desk immediately at <strong>(207) 786-8222<\/strong>.
