{"id":223,"date":"2012-07-25T13:41:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-25T13:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/?page_id=223"},"modified":"2025-07-08T11:02:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T15:02:16","slug":"ebrary-to-tablet","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/ebrary-to-tablet\/","title":{"rendered":"Download Adobe Digital Edition ebrary ebooks to Your iOS or Android Tablet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Downloading Adobe Digital Editions Format ebrary Books to your iPad or Android Tablet:<\/p>\n<p>The Ladd Library now offers an expanding collection of books in electronic format. \u00a0Like most digital media files, these &#8220;e-books&#8221; come in many flavors and file formats. \u00a0Even within a single file format, digital rights management (DRM) systems can vary. \u00a0What follows is a description of how you can download an ebrary book available in the <strong>Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)\u00a0<\/strong>format to a portable iOS or android device.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of ADE ebooks in accessible through the Ladd Library are provided as part of the ebrary Academic Complete Series. \u00a0This collection provides access to greater than 60,000 ADE ebrary books covering a <a href=\"http:\/\/librarytitles.ebrary.com\/browse.action?nodePath=root\">wide range of subjects<\/a>\u00a0from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebrary.com\/corp\/pubpartners.jsp\">long list of publishers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why should I download the book to a tablet or e-reader? Can\u2019t I just read the book from my desktop computer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, you can read ebrary books online <em>via<\/em> the provided web interface. \u00a0In fact, this is the ONLY way you can view ebrary books that are not available in the ADE format. \u00a0The web reader is probably a good choice for previewing the book. \u00a0But for long form reading, this web interface leaves much to be desired. \u00a0It is cumbersome and you are essentially chained to your desk. \u00a0Not fun. \u00a0This is where downloading the book to your tablet is handy.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What you will need:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>A Mac OS or Windows based computer.<\/li>\n<li>An iPad or and Android OS tablet.<\/li>\n<li>An Adobe Digital Editions account (this is free).<\/li>\n<li>Access to the Ladd Library and either the Apple App Store (for iPad) or the Google Play Store (for Android tablets) from your mobile device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>What you will do:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Download Adobe Digital Edition to a desktop computer and obtain an ADE ID and Password.<\/li>\n<li>Install the Bluefire Reader App to your tablet and authorize the App to open ADE ebrary books.<\/li>\n<li>Download an ADE ebrary book to your tablet.<\/li>\n<li>Read your new book.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Detailed instructions&#8230;<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Obtaining an Adobe Digital Editions ID:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Using your Mac OS or Windows based computer (i.e. NOT your tablet), navigate to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/digitaleditions\/\">Adobe Digital Editions home page<\/a> and launch the Adobe Digital Editions Installer.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the instructions to obtain your Adobe Digital Editions ID. \u00a0Write down your ID and Password and store them someplace safe.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong><strong> Installing and authorizing the Bluefire Reader App (The iPad version):<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Apple App Store app on your iPad.<\/li>\n<li>Install the Bluefire Reader app.<\/li>\n<li>Open the Bluefire Reader app. \u00a0You will be greeted with the following:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cBluefire Reader Supports the ePub and PDF file formats as well as Adobe eBook DRM. \u00a0Authorize this app now to read eBooks purchased at a variety of online stores.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Select \u201cAuthorize\u201d and enter your Adobe ID and Password where appropriate. Select \u201cAuthorize\u201d a second time.<\/li>\n<li>Two books will immediately download to your device (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treasure Island<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bluefire Reader User Guide<\/span>).<\/li>\n<li>Assuming all went well, you will be presented with a dialog box stating \u201cAuthorization successful. \u00a0We hope you enjoy Bluefire Reader\u201d. \u00a0Select \u201cOK\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Proceed to &#8220;<strong>Checking out and Downloading ebrary books from the Bates Catalog<\/strong>&#8221; below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong><strong> <strong>Installing and authorizing the Bluefire Reader App<\/strong>\u00a0(The Android version):<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open up the Google Play Store app on your Android tablet (Android versions, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1 and beyond).<\/li>\n<li>Install the Bluefire Reader app.<\/li>\n<li>Open the Bluefire Reader app. \u00a0Two books will immediately download to your device (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Treasure Island<\/span> and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bluefire Reader User Guide<\/span>).<\/li>\n<li>Select the \u201cInfo\u201d icon in the bottom right of the Bluefire Reader screen. \u00a0This opens a \u201cGeneral Info\u201d screen.<\/li>\n<li>On the \u201cGeneral Info\u201d screen, find the \u201cEnable Adobe eBooks\u201d field and enter your Adobe Digital Editions ID and Password. \u00a0If you don\u2019t have an Adobe ID and Password, follow the \u201cDon\u2019t have an Adobe ID? \u00a0Forgot your username and password?\u201d link to set up a free account.<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cAuthorize\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Assuming all went well, you are \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Using your tablet, direct your browser to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/\">Ladd Library Web site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Use the Bates Catalog search feature to search for an \u201cebrary\u201d book of interest available available in the Adobe Digital Editions format. \u00a0If you don\u2019t have a particular book in mind, copy a title from one of the books listed on the ebrary <a href=\"http:\/\/site.ebrary.com\/lib\/academiccompletetitles\/browse.action\">Academic Complete Subscription Collection web site<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0Search for this title in the Bates catalog at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/\">Ladd Library web site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On the entry page for the e-book, choose \u201cView Online\u201d. \u00a0This should direct your browser to a new page showing your e-book in web reader. \u00a0This will allow you to read the entire book and, if you are satisfied with the formatting from this web-based reader, you could stop here. \u00a0Just be sure to maintain a wireless data connection. \u00a0However this guide assumes you\u2019d like to checkout and download the book to your tablet.<\/li>\n<li>Sign in to your ebrary account. \u00a0To do this, select the \u201cSign In\u201d link in the upper right of the web reader window. \u00a0If you don\u2019t have an ebrary account, after choosing the \u201cSign In\u201d link, you will be provided with the option to \u201cCreate an account with a username and password of your choosing\u201d. \u00a0Do this and sign in. \u00a0Write down your ID and Password and store them someplace safe.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/files\/2012\/07\/Sign_in-e1359557402111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" for 14 days in Adobe Digital Editions format\u201d. \u00a0Then select the \u201cOK\u201d button at the bottom right of the page.<\/div>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>You should be presented with a new pop up providing you with the option to \u201cOpen in Bluefire Reader\u201d. \u00a0Select this option to download the book to your device.<\/li>\n<li>When the download is complete, you should be presented with a new pop up providing you with the options to \u201cRead Later\u201d or \u201cRead Now\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy your selection!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>What is the check out period for my new ebrary book?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>All of the\u00a0Ebrary Academic Complete Subscription Collection books can be checked out for 14 days.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How many ebrary books can I check out at a time?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can have up to 10 ebrary books checked out at one time. \u00a0So it is a good idea to preview each title on your web browser prior to check out and download onto your
