Can I have the entire book scanned for my course?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>Unfortunately, there is a very real possibility that we will not be able to provide electronic access to that material in its entirety.&nbsp;It is possible, however, to excerpt limited portions of texts to post on Lyceum, consistent with fair use. Your department\u2019s AAA can help determine what portion of the desired print book can be reasonably posted in Lyceum for use in your course.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible that, for a variety&nbsp;of reasons, some or all of the material requested for electronic access will not be available.&nbsp; In such cases, it may be necessary to use supplementary material or different material altogether.&nbsp; Please contact your&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.bates.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">liaison librarian<\/a>&nbsp;to discuss potential ebook options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" id=\"\"><a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>What materials can be purchased for reserves in the Winter?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>In previous years, the Library has purchased print copies of every book marked as \u201crequired\u201d at the College Store and made them available via course reserves. In an online-only environment, the Library cannot ensure equivalent access. Many books are not for sale to libraries as ebooks&#8211;even if they are sold in electronic format to individuals (e.g. Kindle, Barnes and Noble\u2019s Nook, etc.)&nbsp; This is particularly true for books marketed as textbooks. Even if an ebook version is for sale, the cost to the library to license ebooks is vastly higher than the price of print copies. In the current environment, the Library cannot guarantee that we will have funds to purchase every required text as an ebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If at all possible, we recommend faculty assign materials already available to students online.&nbsp; This includes an extensive collection of high quality, vetted material licensed by Bates College as well as a growing body of open educational resources. Contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:reserve-request@bates.edu\">reserve-request@bates.edu<\/a>&nbsp;with questions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" id=\"\"><a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>How will I make online course materials available to students?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>The easiest place for students to find course materials is via your course\u2019s Lyceum page. Please see Curricular and Research Computing\u2019s tutorials on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/lyceum-tutorials\/lyceum-course-page\/lyceum-course-basic-set-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Basic Set Up<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/curricular-research-computing\/lyceum-tutorials\/lyceum-course-page\/adding-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adding a Video<\/a>. Consult a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.bates.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">librarian<\/a> to make sure any links to online library resources are proxied; this ensures they can be accessed off-campus with a Bates username and password. For any ebook available through the library, please also submit via our <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/request-form-reserve-books\" target=\"_blank\">Reserves form<\/a> so that it will appear in our Course Reserves system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" id=\"\"><a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>Can I have films streamed for my class?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>If you are planning to show video in your Winter course, it is important to provide a list of the materials you intend to use in Winter 2021 to Chris Schiff (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:cschiff@bates.edu\" target=\"_blank\">cschiff@bates.edu<\/a>) before leaving for the summer.\u00a0 Requests received by Nov. 10, 2021 are strongly preferred, so that availability and licensing can be determined before the film is included in your syllabus and it will give us time to work with you if a title is not going to be available for your class. While we cannot guarantee online streaming for every requested title, your liaison librarian can help you identify alternatives that we can license for your course.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty are encouraged to use the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/libguides.bates.edu\/az.php?t=219\" target=\"_blank\">streaming video resources<\/a> to which Bates subscribes. &nbsp; Films not available through these sources may not be available for online instruction.&nbsp; For assistance with these resources, please contact the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.bates.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">liaison librarian<\/a> who supports your discipline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Courses and Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" id=\"\"><a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>Can I still integrate library instruction into my online course? How?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>As always, <a href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.bates.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bates Research Services librarians<\/a> are dedicated to teaching research skills in whatever medium works best for your course. Options include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Synchronous sessions via Zoom. This could be one session or a series.<\/li><li>Short (~5 minute) videos targeted at a specific skill.<\/li><li>Curated library guides with resources and tips tailored to your research assignment.<\/li><li>Scheduled one-on-one or small group consultations for every student in your class.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of formal instruction, Research Services librarians remain available to you and your students for individual research consultations [link to Research Assistance below]. Even a brief introduction to the librarian for your discipline will help students understand and recognize the people available to help them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" id=\"\"><a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>My class is entirely synchronous. Are librarians available for synchronous classes?<\/a><\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section foldaway-inner-yellow\">\n<p>Research Services librarians are available to join synchronous classes for library instruction sessions.
