{"id":2819,"date":"2013-01-06T21:46:58","date_gmt":"2013-01-07T02:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/?p=2819"},"modified":"2013-03-18T10:13:00","modified_gmt":"2013-03-18T14:13:00","slug":"joe-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/2013\/01\/06\/joe-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Joe Smith Interview Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/01\/JoeSmith_4x5-e1357526655578.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2831\" title=\"JoeSmith_4x5\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/01\/JoeSmith_4x5-239x300.jpg\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Over a two year period from 1986 to 1988, Capitol Records\/EMI President Joe Smith recorded interviews with more than 240 recording artists and executives. \u00a0\u00a0Clocking in at 238 hours, this 263 cassette collection of oral histories served as the basis for Smith\u2019s 1988 book \u201cOff the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>After publication of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bates.aquabrowser.com\/?itemid=%7Clibrary\/m\/iii-bates%7Cb12550498\">Off the Record<\/a>\u201d, these remarkable recordings were moved to \u201cstorage\u201d where they remained until early 2012. \u00a0Smith was convinced to remove the interview tapes from his garage and donate them to the Library of Congress where their enormous value was immediately recognized.<\/p>\n<p>It is of note that this historic collection was preserved and made freely available after a conversation between Joe Smith and a member of the first band he signed to Warner Brothers Music. \u00a0Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead and one of the interview subjects, successfully urged Smith to consider donation of tapes. \u00a0It is also of note that the Grateful Dead have promoted <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/GratefulDead\">live \u201cbootleg\u201d recordings of their shows<\/a> for decades and it is in this spirit that Smith\u2019s interviews are made available to the public.<\/p>\n<p>On November 28, 2012, an initial installment consisting of approximately 25 hours of interviews with 25 individuals was made available to the public. \u00a0The index page for the existing public collection can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/record\/joesmith\/index.html\">here<\/a> and a list of the interview subjects is given below.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<table>\n<col width=\"*\" \/>\n<col width=\"*\" \/>\n<col width=\"*\" \/>\n<col width=\"*\" \/>\n<col width=\"*\" \/>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Tony Bennett<\/td>\n<td>David Bowie<\/td>\n<td>Ruth Brown<\/td>\n<td>Dave Brubeck<\/td>\n<td>Burt Bacharach<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ray Charles<\/td>\n<td>Dick Clark<\/td>\n<td>Natalie Cole<\/td>\n<td>Bo Diddley<\/td>\n<td>Ahmet Ertegun<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Peter Frampton<\/td>\n<td>Milt Gabler<\/td>\n<td>Ellie Greenwich<\/td>\n<td>Herbie Hancock<\/td>\n<td>George Harrison<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Mickey Hart<\/td>\n<td>Mick Jagger<\/td>\n<td>B.B.
