Stanton is back in the Library.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s looking better than ever after the conservation work on both the cleaning of the painting and the reconstruction of parts of the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Affectionately known as &#8220;Uncle Johnny&#8221;,\u00a0 Prof. Stanton assumed the responsibilities of librarian in 1865, in addition to teaching, and some of the changes he implemented are still a part of our tradition today.\u00a0 He established a system wherein the first scholars in the classes became his assistants, he kept the library open \u201ca few hours each day\u201d and substantially increased the collection to 12,000 volumes.<\/p>\n<p>We are honored to have him back gracing our walls and giving a measure of gravitas to our Main floor lounge area.\u00a0 Come see him next time your in the building.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> After a short hiatus to the Maine Project for Fine Art Conservation, the portrait of Prof. Jonathan Y.
