The photograph, courtesy of the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, is funky and the hats are groovy. Yet Short Term, unveiled in 1966, was supposed to be square, man, a way for students to take extra courses and hustle through Bates in three years. But the initial no-frills, classroom-based courses like &#8220;Elements of Art&#8221; and &#8220;Introduction to the New Testament&#8221; quickly gave way to the faculty\u2019s better ideas about what a warm-weather term should be.
