Bates’ 2005 Sesquicentennial prompts an inquiry of famous firsts. The women’s archery team , seen here in the 1935 Mirror<\/em>, was one of the\u00a0first women’s teams at Bates to compete on an intercollegiate basis. Sort of. An eight-person squad participated in the National Intercollegiate\u00a0Telegraphic Archery Tournament, in which colleges competed on their own campuses and telegraphed scores offsite for tallying.
