Jay Burns<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Semper Fidelity\u00a0How does a lowly first-year law student cruise to the\u00a0presidency of Michigan Law School<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 132px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;border: 0px initial initial\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/Images\/Bates_Magazine\/Summer04\/goelection.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"0\" width=\"122\" height=\"145\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jay Surdukowski  for president.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Student Senate?<\/p>\n<p>A little humility, a little humor, a lot of political savvy\u00a0\u2014 tactics familiar to anyone who remembers how\u00a0Jay Surdukowski &#8217;02 ran the Representative Assembly\u00a0during his Bates days.<\/p>\n<p>Surdukowski pulled down 59 percent of the Michigan\u00a0Law student vote in a three-way senate election\u00a0that saw vitriolic debates over big issues (affirmative\u00a0action, faculty hiring) and small ones (drinkers&#8217; rights).\u00a0&#8220;Fortunately I have stayed above the nastiness,&#8221; he\u00a0said prior to the election.<\/p>\n<p>Surdukowski, whose achievement\u00a0as a 1L senate president is rare, if not unique, was\u00a0the only candidate to use a campaign tactic familiar\u00a0at Bates: humorous, pop-culture posters (his posters\u00a0parodied High Fidelity, Fight Club, and Ferris Bueller&#8217;s\u00a0Day Off ).\u00a0In sort of a Carly Simon, &#8220;where-you-should-be-allthe-\u00a0time&#8221; moment, Surdukowski left the U.S. in June\u00a0for The Hague for his summer job at the International\u00a0Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia in the United Nations\u00a0Office of the Prosecutor (the office handling the Slobodan\u00a0Milosevic war-crimes trial).<\/p>\n<p>He was scheduled to arrive just as the former Yugoslavia leader was to begin his\u00a0defense. &#8220;It&#8217;s perhaps the most significant trial of a world leader since Nuremberg,&#8221; Surdukowski says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An overwhelming election victory By H.
