Hazeur comes from George Mason University, where she worked as assistant to the president and director of equity and diversity services.<\/p>\n<p>To the Board of Trustees: <strong>George W. Cole<\/strong> P&#8217;07, effective Feb. 2, 2008; <strong>Steven A. Brown<\/strong> &#8217;69, <strong>Sarah Risley Pearson<\/strong> &#8217;75, and <strong>Jeremy M. Sclar<\/strong> &#8217;88, all effective July 1.<\/p>\n<p>AWARDED A Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to <strong>Jordan Williams<\/strong> &#8217;07, who will use the $25,000 grant to research graffiti cultures in Germany, Brazil, and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Fulbright Program grants of varying amounts to <strong>Dana Burgard<\/strong> &#8217;08, who will teach English in Germany; <strong>Allison Caine<\/strong> &#8217;07, for cultural research in Peru (see &#8220;Ends of a Campaign,&#8221; Fall 2006); <strong>Caitlin deWilde<\/strong> &#8217;08, who will teach English in Belgium; and <strong>Brandt Miller<\/strong> &#8217;08, to research concepts of masculinity in Mongolia (for related story, see page 12).<\/p>\n<p>CONCLUDED Terms for Trustees <strong>Robert E. Ward Smith<\/strong> P&#8217;01, effective June 30.<\/p>\n<p>RETIRED Effective July 31: <strong>Robert Allison<\/strong>, a faculty member since 1980 and a professor of religion whose achievements include the development of a watermark database useful in researching Greek manuscripts; <strong>Melinda Harder<\/strong>, a faculty member since 1987 and a lecturer in mathematics specializing in the application of mathematical models to biology; <strong>Eli Minkoff<\/strong>, professor of biology, author of several textbooks and a member of the faculty since 1968; <strong>John &#8220;Jack&#8221; Pribram<\/strong>, a professor of physics instrumental in creating Bates&#8217; environmental studies program, and a member of the faculty since 1970; <strong>Lewis Turlish,<\/strong> a faculty member since 1969 and a professor of English who had lived the material he taught in the course &#8220;Beatniks and Mandarins: A Literary and Cultural History of the American Fifties&#8221;; <strong>Anne Williams<\/strong>, professor of economics, a member of the faculty since 1980, and a nationally known authority on jigsaw puzzles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Retirement offerings presented at the final 2008 Bates faculty meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PREMIERED The English translation of <em>Prah,<\/em> a short play by <strong>Gy\u00f6rgy Spir\u00f3<\/strong>, considered Hungary&#8217;s leading contemporary playwright. <strong>Martin Andrucki<\/strong>, Charles A. Dana Professor of Theater, commissioned the translation. The play was performed in May by a Short Term theater workshop.<\/p>\n<p>PUBLISHED <em>Sprawling Places,<\/em> a proposal for a more nuanced and complex view of such modern environments as strip malls and subdivisions, by David Kolb, Charles A. Dana Professor Emeritus of Philosophy (University of Georgia Press, 2008).<\/p>\n<p>DECEASED <strong>Harold A. Bourget<\/strong>, a member of the Dining Services staff from 1985 through 1999, on March 14, at 74; <strong>Lawrence J. Flynn Jr.<\/strong>, on April 22, at 76, a member of the Facility Services staff from 1979 until April 18 of this year; <strong>Ernest P. Muller,<\/strong> professor emeritus of history, April 1, at 89 (see obituary, page 57); <strong>Margaret G.
