In Florida, Verna Brackett Kirby is active in College Club, church activities and bridge clubs…. We are saddened to learn of the death of Bernard Drew, for many years pastor of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn., and send our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Gladys…. Spencer Furbush wrote that life is quieter now that there is no more southern traveling. He entertains at Moody Beach in the summer and said that “the better they cook, the more often they get invited!”… Living with his daughter and husband in Bradenton, Fla., Rob Johnston swims occasionally in their pool and keeps in touch with his “far-flung family and few surviving friends by mail.” He may hold a class record for descendants: 16 great-grandchildren plus three adopted ones, one great-great grandchild with two more on the way. Three great-greats are in college and three grands are teachers…. Jackie and Ed Lelyveld have traveled to family weddings in Indiana, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and to that of grandson Morris Lelyveld ’64 in Vermont…. Louise Mallinson Jagger gets much pleasure from her children, grandchildren, and two great-grands…. Doris and Nate Milbury have moved to a continuing care facility in Rye, N.H., to be near their daughter and family…. We all look forward to Doris Neilson Whipple’s annual accompaniment to the Alma Mater at Reunion. In winter 2001 she spent four months at a lovely condo in Holmes Beach, Fla., where she saw her daughter in Bradenton and had visits from her Maine son…. Elizabeth Saunders Smith writes a family newspaper (now Volume 40) on the computer and sends family news to about 15 kinfolk. She formerly wrote a weekly column for the Milbrook (N.Y.) local paper when she and her late husband, Abbott ’34, lived there. Living in Kingfield, she watches the ski traffic on the way to Sugarloaf and spends a lot of time reading, her favorite occupation…. Donald Smith said that he is “still crying over the election results.” He is working on a family history, which includes a relationship to President Cheney. (Bates’ Special Collections received “The Smith Papers: The Personal and Professional Papers” of Senator George Edwin Smith 1873, LL.D. 1918, and of Judge Clarence Cheney Smith 1888, nephews of President Cheney. The papers were donated to Bates by Stanton T. Smith ’50 and his sister, the late Jane Smith Lefebvre ’45.)… In Pittsfield, Eileen Soper lives with 15 other residents at Sebasticook Community Home with a caring staff and visits from her niece who takes care of her needs. She goes out occasionally, but is content to “stay put.”… Charles Whipple is still involved in church, community, and charity activities.… Larry and Toby Zahn Griffiths celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary, flying to Iceland and Sweden, cruised to Russia, Poland, Estonia, Finland and back to Sweden….
